At the Lengberg Castle in East Tyrol, an archeological discovery is rewriting the history of underwear. Until now, common consensus was that bras were first worn around a hundred years ago.

However, an unexpected unearthing shows that women were sporting brassieres as long ago as the 15th and 16th centuries, meaning women in the middle ages were more clued up about their unmentionables than people originally thought.

Austria: Medieval bras rewrite history

Four medieval bras have been found among textiles excavated from a castle, confounding conventional wisdom that bras did not exist before the 19th century.

The linen garments were found in the remains of Lengberg Castle in Austria's eastern Tyrol.

Like modern bras, they have two distinct cups and decorative needle lace that would not have been visible when worn under a dress.
