An overall plan for developing the city of Fayoum Whales Valley area


The ministerial committee formed by Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Nazif to develop Al-Hitan (Whales) valley area at an array of nature reserve held its second meeting to consider a plan for the purpose.

The committee comprised environment, local government, tourism, housing, higher education, and culture and irrigation ministers in addition to the governor of Al-Fayoum Mohamed Raafat Mahmoud.

The governor of Fayoum said that the meeting dealt with the results reached in light of the recommendations made during the first meeting and the proposed work programme as this area of Al-Hittan (Whales) valley was declared a nature reserve by the UNESCO.

Excavations of a group of fossilized whales dated back to 40 million year were found in this area in addition to some other excavations of Sharks.

The lenght of the fossilized whales discovered reached 21 meters. Geologically the area dates back to almost 54 million years.

US University of Michigan is taking part in carrying out this plan for developing the area.
