well masrawi, although this stemmed from a personal comment made to me (not as part of an 'argument' by the way) i was trying to see whether or not the muslim people here agreed with the statement she made or not.

I'm Muslim and I don't believe your children should be taken away if you drink alcohol. I can't answer for all Muslims but that's my opinion. Now I don't believe it's right to get drunk in front of children. How many ppl will have a beer or glass of wine in the evening and their children are present? I know many here that do just that and they are fine parents. They have a drink to unwind but they're not drunk. Many ppl here will have drinks available at a child's b-day party which I find inappropriate. It's a kid's party for God's sake. However, If your children are with a sitter and you go out for drinks or what have you then it's your business. Anyways...If a parent gets drunk regularly and puts their children in harm's way or abuses the child due to the alcohol then yes, I believe the children should be protected.

Seeking to crack down on sexual predators in the era of the Internet, Canada's government brought in legislation on Thursday that would raise the legal age of sexual consent to 16 from an unusually young 14.
Justice Minister Vic Toews said changing the law will bring Canada's standards into line with those of several other countries, and he complained that Canada's relatively low age of consent has attracted sexual predators from more restrictive countries.
But the proposal, first outlined in April, will also allow youngsters to have consensual sex with people up to five years older or younger, even if that means one partner is aged 14 or 15.
"Our goal in this legislation is not to criminalize teenage youth who may be involved in sexual activity with their peers," Toews told reporters in Ottawa. "It is to make the law more effective in protecting vulnerable young people from adult sexual predators."
Consent standards vary around the world in terms of age, gender and sexual orientation. In most U.S. states, the age of sexual consent is 16 and in some cases -- Arizona is one example -- it is as old as 18.
The move fits well with efforts in recent years by law enforcement officials to track down adult Internet predators, Ottawa Police Chief Vince Bevan said.
"There are a number of local cases that spring to mind where had the intended activity been taken to the point of sexual contact this new law would certainly apply," he said.
Toews predicted that the move would find broad support among the public, police forces and with lawmakers of all political stripes.
However, some advocacy groups, including the Canadian Federation for Sexual Health, have expressed concern about changing the law in this way.
The federation, formerly Planned Parenthood, said there is no evidence that raising the age of consent will better protect young people, and warned it may discourage young people from seeking out birth control options or other assistance.
"I can certainly see that once a crime has taken place, it may make it easier for the authorities to prosecute a predator. But that's not protection, that's an after-the-fact response," said Andrea Cohen, the federation's president.
Toews introduced the legislation in the House of Commons on Thursday, the last day of proceedings before Parliament's summer break, so debate will start only after Parliament resumes on September 18.

You are asking for developing countries that don't even properly count their own people in census reports (for politcal reasons) and you want numbers on who cuts up their daughters?
Now that is a stretch, and an impossibility. You cannot even manage to find a authentic count of FGM in Egypt.

In Mediterranean area it may be more acceptable and it is well known that some Gulf states citizens, when they go abroad, liquor is equal to water as a beverage of choice! yazid904, I can't possibly tell you how many of those rich Gulf Arabs have full bars, or even double bars in their homes.
I know a guy who has a MGM store in Minnetonka he also has an exporter license for Kuwait, you can imagine that 100% of his exporting business to Kuwait is hard liquor?
You don't even want to know what the custom papers describe the actual shipment as....

I have classmates from about 30 different countries in Africa. Over half admit to FGM being practiced by the Catholics in their country.

hey charm I am not taking your side on this one.
I don't consider most muslim perform FGM on their daughters, actually the percentage is low nowdays.
But when there are Muslims who drink and aren't ashamed of it in front of westerners, but they are ashamed inthe company of other Muslims; they cannot stand being put in a tough spot like this thread.
Now you as a westerner who loves booze and is not ashamed of it, and myself a westerner who despises booze and won't touch it; it hardly can be said we view alcohol consumption in the same way.

BTW... ive just read the 'alcohol is your friend' thread and a couple of links to other alcohol threads where it there are some pretty strong muslim views on how bad it was of me to post that on forum that is MOSTLY muslim and therefor dont drink...

When I was volunteering as an ESL tutor I came across at least 5 doctors from developing countries (2 from Columbia) that thought as soon as they had mastered several hundred spoken words of English they could take the state licensing exams orally like the "citizenships" test.
Over time I learned just how headstrong, vulgar and vindictive these "professionals" or doctoras could be. I had to dig up the information for them (some of them wanted the printed laws to be notarized to make sure it was official ) and I had another volunteer fluent in Spanish to explain to him that it wasn't that the USA is out to ruin his life, these laws are for everyone.
He had sent his wife and kids to the USA 5 years before due to the fighting between the drug cartels in Bogata. It was his firm stance that unless he could practice medicine just by passing an oral exam he wasn't going to stay in the USA. And it was also his insistance that his wife support herself and their children on her own, he wasn't going to wire her money because of the exchange rate. And he really didn't want his wife and kids to come home with him, now that they had been tainted by the USA because they had lived here for five years, his family was out to get him like the US laws and regulations.
Basically he is a bastard.
And during those 3 years I ran into loads of professionals with advanced degrees that couldn't practice their professions in the USA without going back to college for a few years. All of them demanded that the laws were against them personally and somehow the US government has to give them a pension for being stripped of their elite status.
This is why I prefer immigrants who are illerate and come here with nothing but the clothes on their backs. They are far more accepting of the fact that in the USA they must start over and are more than willing to work their way up.
Hence why I distrust "third-world doctoras", they have a sh*tty attitude.
And naturally you are willing to believe anything Auto has to tell you know that I have proved a weak arguement of yours.
Auto made a threat, no one in their right mind would make a threat of that nature unless they had done it before (actually carried out the evil deed). In addition to posting personal photos of me and the Muslimahs in my family, which very much explains that his threat was a slight and light-hearted threat, he really meant it.
But hey your life in the Netherlands has weakened your deen and so now child porn isn't that much of a sin to you.

Go to the Ramesseum cafe on the West bank any afternoon or evening, and you will see maybe 20 local muslems drinking. Go to any restaurant or bar, and the number of Egyptians drinking outnumbers the numbers not drinking. I've even seen a couple of caleche drivers drinking in Sindbad's open air cafe at 8.30 in the morning!
This is obviously a non-scientific survey, but I'm certain a significant minority drink, and don't mind being seen to drink.

My Christian blood relatives don't have religious laws regarding their pictures on the internet.

From what I understand the enticement of starting a medical career in Europe was too much, your husband allowed you this and you didn't bother to notice that with his one hand giving the other was taking away the same gift.
He knew eventually it would come to this and now he has what he wanted all along. A complacent housewife.
I put my foot down and made my education a priority and didn't allow my husband to fool me out of anything.
After a few years people will address him as "doctor" and they will address you as "Dr. so and so's wife".
