Originally posted by SayWhatYouSee: [QB] Why can't Christians and Muslims offer each other the same respect which non believers offer them? To me , both scriptures are man made texts. They are the work of many men and this is reflected in the contradictions and flaws within. Far from being disrespectful to 'God' my view doesn't require me to arrogantly bash doctrine over the head of those with specific faiths. Religions have often sought to discourage opposing views. Apostasy is even seen as a reason to kill men and women created by 'God.' That such self preserving measures are apparent in scriptures is evidence of the desire to control and enforce. I have a sense of 'God' as a creator of the universe, beauty, mankind. To me , 'God' would be fair, forgiving, all knowing and all seeing. Why would 'God' condone violating human rights? Why would 'God' seek to keep people in fear and poverty? Why would 'God' wish women to have lesser rights than man (and a degree is lesser)? Why would 'God' demand that evil acts are done in 'his' name, like killing? Why would 'God' want religions to compete with each other, over which loves 'God' best and which faith is the 'real' one? 'God' wouldn't, in my opinion. Of course, holy book thumpers are free to disagree. They will quote the words written by man, in their 'God's' name, to justify everything and anything, contrary to human decency and common sense. That is their right. I don't see the need to kill anyone who disagrees with my belief system. I don't see the questioning of my views as an insult to 'God.' The holy book thumpers just don't get that their behaviour insults 'God.' Why? If there is a 'God' (which I have no proof of but feel a sense of), I think God would truly be great. 'God' is above criticism, can not suffer by the blind words of blind men, surely? 'God' must be saddened by all of those who abuse, impose religion on and oppress others in 'his' name. If we respect 'God's' creation - mankind, we would move forward so much more quickly. If your religion doesn't allow you to respect all of God's people, with their wide range of beliefs, question it, question it and question it again. If your religion tells you not to question, doubt it, doubt it and doubt it again. If extremists are distorting your religion, why protect them? If idiots spew hatred, yet claim to share your faith, why condone such behaviour. Don't offer protection to such idiocy as they happen to be a Catholic, Muslim, Protestant, Jew, whatever. The last vestige of idiots is to declare that no one understands anything but them. You can study Islam and not be a Muslim. You can study Christianity and not be a Christian. You can study religion and not believe. I absolutely respect everyone's right to believe what they like and that belief is a personal matter. I don't respect anyone who seeks to impose any religion on another human being or denies others freewill. The sad thing about these threads is that they will go on and on, with the holy book thumpers learning nothing about each other's religion, respecting no one but themselves and wondering why their own lives are so miserable.
