Yusra deals with rape in Egypt

Posted: 27-02-2007 , 02:58 GMT

Prominent Egyptian actress Yusra has given her approval for the leading role in the new television drama “Al Daktoora Abla wa Thi’ab Al Madina” (Dr. Abla and the wolves of the city). The new drama is written by Muhsin Al Jalad, production by Jamal Al Adel and directed by Syrian director Mohammad Azizieh, marking his first directing experience in Egypt.

In the drama, Yusra will for the first time tackle the issue of rape, and how percentage rates of women raped in Egypt have increased tremendously.

Through the drama, Yusra will show how society deals with raped women and how they are perceived as women with bad reputation and not as victims.

Yusra will play the role of a university professor, who teaches child medicine.

The actress is also preparing to star in a new radio drama titled “Primadona Her Majesty”, which is written by Mahmoud Ali Fahmi and directed by Nashwi Abdul Min’em.

Recently Yusra denied allegations that she indirectly pressured Egyptian actress Hannan Turk to remove the Hijab, an Islamic headdress.

Yusra also stated that she never asked Hannan's husband, businessman Khaled Khatab, to make his wife remove the Hijab or that she is behind the problems that are currently between the couple and may lead to their divorce.

Yusra stated that she had left Egypt before the Cairo International Film Festival, and during the entire time she was abroad she kept receiving numerous calls that she is pushing Hannan to remove the Hijab.

She added that once she returned to Egypt, she made a private call to Hannan and asked her if she was pressuring her to remove the Hijab, which Hannan told her that she never did. Yusra had then asked Hannan why she was saying that Yusra is pressuring her, but the latter stated that she never discussed the matter of her Hijab with anyone because it is a personal issue that is of no one's business.

Yusra said that some had taken advantage of her travel outside Egypt to create problems between her and Hannan. She noted that she does not pay much attention to such rumors and that matters like the Hijab is a decision that one takes on their own.

Rumors had it allegations made by Hannan against prominent actress Yusra has caused criticism to surface. It was said that Hannan stated that Yusra had repeatedly attempted to convince her to remove the Hijab.

During a televised interview with Hannan on the Dubai satellite television channel, Hannan said that Yusra indirectly requested her to stop wearing it. Yusra told Hannan’s husband to talk to his wife and try and persuade her to take off the Hijab because it will have a negative impact on her acting career.

Notice how the article halfway through goes to a more superficial yet more "important" topic of the veil, instead of justice for women? [Roll Eyes] Who the hell is the editor in chief at Al Bawaba and can he read?
