Not in an exact way, but story telling through poetry always been popular in african countries. Particulary Somalia and Senegal. I don't know that Amharas have only ever danced from the waist up, and outside influence was in Ethiopia prior to the 1990s. Some of the best jazz music I've heard was made in Ethiopia for a short time in the 60s and 70s.
