I have heard it over and over again that Obama is a socialist. However, when the Republicans take office they typically redirect money into the defense fund. Now, my question, isn't the military a form of socialism?

Think about it, isn't the military a government run program that doesn't have profit in mind? So, the military is not a form of private capitalism. The only definition that fits for the military is that it is a government own industrial complex.

Are there really a political group of people that truly advocate a smaller government? Not from what I keep seeing. One way or another, both the Republicans and the Democrats advocate a larger Government and is forcing socialism on us.

Isn't sending troops into a country to try to forced that country to follow our political agenda a type of socialism? Isn't that what the Nazis did?

I am a bit confused on this subject. The Police Force itself, is that not a form of socialism? How about the Fire Department, Public School system, etc. Are they not all social programs for the benefit of the citizens ran by the government producing a service?

Basically an Industry produces a service of some kind. If the Government runs that Industry then it is Socialism.

So how is Obama anymore of a Socialist than Bush or even Reagan? So instead of Nation building in foreign lands we now have a President that wants to do Nation building at home and he is considered a Socialist? But at the same time if we send troops into a country and then force socialism on them that is not being socialistic?

Iraq is now a socialist society where Industry is controlled by our Government and we determine what they will do with the profit from it. So, we have spread socialism by using our Socialistic industry (our military).

So the next time you hear that Obama is a Nazi and so on, consider the messenger. Many of them have no problem spreading Socialism abroad. There message is quite simply: Do Unto Others what you don't want done unto yourself.

The United States, for much of its history, was a socialist state. All core infrastructure in that nation was developed by public funds. In addition, much of US's research arm is public and largely funded through the Pentagon. Not just defense projects, but the spin-offs (medical, telecom, etc) associated with it.

The most laissez faire sectors such as print media and television used to depend on subsidies as well. That was during a time when the United States didn't have an strong independent media apparatus. Since that is no longer the case, we see less funding here.

Nonetheless, US is a command economy that intervenes heavily in economic operations. The only nation that adopts (or forced to) pure capitalism are third world nations. These represent some of the poorest in the world, where core infrastructure spending is at a minimal and corruption (including funneling profits to Western sources) are maximized.

Btw, should these threads (along those surrounding Haiti) be in the politics thread? Most of us do post in that section. I think the mod should send it over there and let discussions occur on that section.

Thread-making needs to be severely curtailed.
