I am thinking of going to Luxor, would like to know when is the high season, and when the low season starts. Where to stay there and what to see. I was thinking of 5 days is that enough to see evreything. There was an offer by Karank Travel 4days HB and drinks dbr and rt ticket to Luxor at the Karank Sofital for 910 pounds pp. Is that a good hotel and is that air ticket from Cairo-Luxor-Cairo

Sofitel Karnak is nice but its a bit out of town.
The high season is from November til March.

There are loads of good hotels and it depends very much on your budget. I wouldn'y do half board though. Just bed and breakfast, eating out is part of the fun.
Don't forget to visit the West Bank where I live for meals, we are much cheaper and more traditional.

Sofitel Karnak is mainly done on HB basis. They were going to sell the hotel as an all inclusive resort. The other Hotels offer BB.
When are you coming???
The Merdien is currently adding another floor to the building so there is some noisey work going on. That will last for about 6 weeks. Inshallah LOL
Movenpick has just completed some renovation work in the main building but the new pool is not yet finished (still using the old one which is nice). It will be wonderful when it is finished. Movenpick is a bit far out too but the opp end to the Sofitel Karnak.
Hilton in Karnak is nice, but could do with an upgrade. Someone just posted that the Chinese there is good.
Winter Place. Living on its name I think. Desperate need of renovation.
Sheraton. Always popular. Good setting and not too far out. Great food. It will be getting renovated in May and June 2005. Public areas. Its getting a new bar, lobby and restaurant.
Sonesta. Nice and handy. Lots of marble everywhere. Bar is quiet. Food is wonderful. Pool is nice although the water is always cold.
The mid year vacation for the children and feast will be happening within the next couple of weeks and the city will be full of Egyptian families.

Karim Low season is usually between end of November and mid-Feb (except Xmas) here but due to the heat can be July in Egypt. Check out lastminute.com they have great offers at the moment. One of the best hotels in Luxor is the Sonesta St.George and between now and Easter you can get a single room for £25 a night BB with a Nile view and a double for around £30 !

Sorry but the high season (PEAK) time is during the winter months as I said before. It is much more comfortable for the guests sight seeing when it is cooler so that is when the prices are higher and the occupancy is greater.
The low season in July August summer time is too hot. The occupancy levels are lower and room rates are reduced with many travel companies offering lots of special late deals.

I agree with you Kenzie. Low season is definitely the summer months, much to hot, and the cruises dont run from Luxor due to the lock closure during June.
Welshlady..... where did you find those prices for the Sonesta.... the Sonesta quoted me $50 per night just to upgrade to a front Nile view room and I only managed to bargain them down to $40 a night. still way more than the Meridien charge for an upgrade. And they charge a supplement for a double room instead of a twin.

Yes my error I meant low season if book from UK, July is low season for Egypt due to the heat where you can cook an egg on the pavement!
Shareen - went on the internet only two days ago to book accomodation for my sister, try logging onto lastminute.com select "hotels, luxor, 5 star". I booked her a single room at Sonesta St.George for Feb 2005 and the cost £123.30 for 5 nights (£24.66 a night BB) for a double/twin only £154.70 (£30.94 for two people BB which is only £15.50 per night...and WITH nile view !
Only £14 BB for a two people in a twin room BB in the Josephs Hotel across the road, for the same month (same website).
Karim £910 seems a little expensive, best to find cheap flight to Cairo and take the 1st class sleeper down to Luxor, takes 9hrs overnight but you can possibly do 2 wks taking in both Cairo and Luxor for around £400-£500 if you choose your hotels wisely - as long as you avoid high season and public holidays.

Nice prices Welshwoman, but if its for travelling in the next few weeks, then I can see why they are so good. Oh, and the majority of rooms in the Sonesta have a nile view..... its a side nile view, but the balconies are angled so that its almost as good as the ones on the front. St Joseph at £14 per night is pretty average. You can call them direct at anytime and get that price. Lol, in Luxor everything is negotiable.

I live in Cairo. just saw another package:
4 night nile cruise + 3 night at Isis Aswan hotel= 1690 BB on hotel and FB on the cruise.
2 night in Aswan+ 3 cruise nights+ 2 Luxor nights at Izis hotel= 1490
What about these offers, will I think i will travel end of March it will be cheaper then.

Karim, I went on the Sun Ray in 2003, it was a lovely boat, very clean, newly built, the food was excellent and no tummy bugs.
All in all we had an excellent trip. We booked through Kuoni, but maybe you can find it listed elsewhere.
Good Luck. If you are not going alone why not rent a flat and eat out.That way you really get to know the place and the locals.

It was 7 days.Really worth doing. Great way to see Egypt from a boat. The excursions were also good and so much information given. Definately a good way of seeing everything from Luxor to Aswan. We also flew to Abu Simbel that was one of the best experiences of the whole trip.Friends took a hot air baloon trip over the west bank in Luxor they said it was amazing. The boat trip is full board so you do not have to worry about money for food etc. Just take a good pair of walking shoes.
