If you go to Luxor, there is a backpacker hostel I have stayed in called the New Everest Hotel (NB NOT THE SAME AS THE "EVEREST HOTEL") - its 20-30 Egyptian Pounds a night depending if you want a private bathroom or not, up to 3 beds in a room. Clean but basic (supply your own sheet and towel). Its listed in the Lonely Planet guide. Its about 5 mins walk from the train station.

In Hurghada there's another fairly basic place called Sea Waves (065-545-071, Owner +2 012 468-8741) cost us 50 Egyptian Pounds a night for 2 people in a double room with private bathroom (again supply own sheet and towel!). It ran out of water while I was there but the people are friendly and the roof is nice and relaxing. I couldn't explain to you how to find it though I'm afraid! Its not in the main resort though so you would have to bus it if you want the bars and night life.

I would advise you to get a student card on arrival in Egypt. It means that you get half price travel and half-price entrance to all the archaeological sites.

There are several back-backers lodges in Luxor that have dormitary rooms from about 5 LE to 10 LE per night.
