I recently returned home to the UK after a 2 week self coordinated trip throughout Egypt. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in Egypt until the last 2 days, I made my way to Alexandria with a friend, we stayed at his father's friend/employee's house, it was already 3am in the morning and we needed only a few hours before setting off for the train to Cairo the next morning... I was quite exhausted by the time we reached this person's holiday house in Alexandria, his Egyptian hospitality (going out to buy groceries for my breakfast the next day) put me at ease... but 15 mins after I sipped on half a glass of lemonade (thought it tasted 'not quite right but it was an Egyptian lemonade, not Sprite like I'm accustomed to) I had a shower and became dizzy, disillusioned and passed out in my bedroom... the next morning I realised he spiked my drink, I woke up to find this person standing in my room with a camera, I screamed at him, grabbed my friend and just wanted to get out of the house and to a police station (but no good, this man is wealthy, very easy to bribe police in Egypt!)

Could anyone please tell me if you have heard about drink spiking in Egypt? What type of drug do they use? I know Rohypnol is common in the UK, Europe and the USA but would really like to have an idea what it was he administered because I seem to be having trouble with vertigo and low blood pressure and it's been almost 2 weeks!

Look forward to hearing your responses

Amanda

My friend was also drugged too, I suppose to prevent any interference if he had managed to lock himself in the room with me... My friend stayed in the same room as me (I made him because I felt so disoriented and wanted him to be there)... I know this sounds weird, but I know my body... there definitely wasn't any forced vaginal or anal penetration and definitely no oral (no signs of such and I know my body very well)

My friend said that he'd make sure his father fired him over this...

I hate the feeling that I blacked out for 8 hours or so!

The fact that it happened in a home, not a nightclub... I almost took the soda in the can but he said he'd bring the drinks into us... they were served in mugs, I didn't think anything of this, only that it was a holiday house for this man so perhaps his cupboards were a little bare...

Yes, I think we need to be aware that 'date rape drugs' are also available in the middle east...

From what I observed of the culture and of this man, he may have just got his 'rocks off' taking photos of me topless, maybe that was 'enough' for him...

I posted a similar thread on www.egypt-talk.com and also another board.

To say the least the entire thread was a disaster. [Roll Eyes]

But remember in Egypt a woman admiting to being violated or raped will often be treated as the suspect. Reporting sexual crimes is not common.

He's rich, he'll get away with it. He's more than likely done it before.

Go to a doctor and get a toxicology screening, make sure nothing in your system has been permenantly altered.

Luckily you are not married to an Egyptian. If this happened to me, even though I am now divorced I couldn't voice one single comment about it. It would affect my relationship with my ex-in-laws (even though they will always be family, they are still Egyptian) and probably taint my daughter's reputation.

If anything is done about these matters the US State Department finds a inadvertant way of discouraging the perpetrator from doing it again. Like not issueing the perp a visa for any reason, along with many of his collegues. If this became a public criminal matter, he'd be a hero. Hurt him at his wallet or personal freedoms without making it a public matter then it'll curb his future criminal activities.

I am not joking, Egypt is in the Middle East! [Frown]

Yes I think now that I'm home I will report it... I was only 12 hours shy of boarding my flight home, the last thing I wanted was to spend another night in Cairo. I doubt most tourists would put themselves in those situations, I purely stepped out of my comfort and (stupidly) 'safety' zone(s) for the sake of the book I am writing... so 'out of body experience' I certainly received!

Apart from this isolated experience, I loved Egypt and the Egyptian people... the men tend to be a little more amorous and quite obvious with their admiration but then again most are polite with their verbal comments...

I don't think I'll have a problem with 'writer's block', at the moment I am attempting to get my head around the Qu'ran, Islam and modern Egyptian womens rights...

Was this a homecoming for you?

Why on earth would you write a book on this trip when it was only a few weeks?

I'm not writing a book about my 2 week encounter in Egypt, I have been working on this particular book for over a year now, it just happens that my trip to Egypt was for research purposes.... turns out I got a little more than I bargained for... I'm not happy with the implications of jeopardising my personal safety but am grateful to have survived it and to be able to warn others and possibly prevent future incidents from occuring.

In response to Albino Eskimo, thank you for your words, much appreciated. I agree with you about rape victims being treated as the suspects in the middle east, particularly a western woman. I was getting cussed at by my male friend for accidentally revealing my knee when getting into a taxi (my skirt was below the knee), he wasn't upset at the taxi driver for looking but gave me the evil eye for not being more cautious.

I plan on having some blood tests this week, I seem to be suffering from vertigo and though I have had occasional bouts of low blood pressure it isn't normally this frequent.

I will now read your other posting.

Dammm,

I really cant beleive in all that i just read, im shocked but not surprised.

I am a male, and it makes me sick the way egyptian men treat women. Some of them are so disgusting. I was walking home from work with my flatmate (female) and she was called a whore by this "w.nker". She was wearing a long sleeve top not revealing and jeans.

Im so terribly sorry that you had that horrible experience. So much for a Muslim country heim ?

So much for advertising they are good and the best and then you hear something like this.

May God be with you dear and let us know if you need anything [Smile]

Hugs from Cairo

this is a problem that could happen in any country not in egypt only or by egyptian men only, u r the wrong person coz u trusted a friend and it ended that this friend did not care much about ur safety and it seems here that he was in crime with the lemon juice idea coz without of his agree it was not going to happen to u by all means and he acted as if he was also druged with u.

Not only a western woman........ many of us go through some sort of sexual harrassement but it is irritating to go & report it here........ you will be exposed to sh!tty policemen asking you inappropriate questions

African Pride & Yorshire Rose, Take care....... I hope you get better..... it does get better with time.

Just dont beat yourself up for it, you're the victim. Remember that & there's nothing else you could have done............. we all forget when we should be afraid...... fear is good

Please have yourself checked by a specialist immediately...some date rape drugs do not leave any trace in your system,,,but it seems that whatever you were given was in very high dosage,,,enough for you to have side effects two weeks later.. Have yourself checked please,,,depending on what was given your symptoms need to be treated symtematically. Get onto any medical website if you are too afraid to go to a doctor ,,but do speak to a proffesional about the incident,,,take care of nose bleeds, nausea, sleeping more than usual, increased thirst and any abnormal bodily function.
Take care!
