Hi, when I go to Sharm next week I want to try a really great traditional Egyptian meal in a restaurant, do the restaurants display their menus in english too?
has anyone got a tip of what I should try or what is known to be good in egypt?
Do restaurants offer a dish (a bit like a greek meze) where they offer a selection of traditional dishes?
Even better can anyone recommend a restaurant in Sharm (Namma Bay)

Hi, my future husband cureently lives in Sharm and when we have gone out to eat he has always taken me to the old market area of Sharm, a lot less commercial than Nama Bay, not that there is anything wrond with Nama Bay definatley good for a good lively night out! I am not sure of the restaurants name that we have been to on various occasion (will ask him for you when I phone him), but a lot of the locals seem to go there. From what I can remember the menu is in arabic and english. I have never had the equivalent of the Greek meze but I am sure that if you order a few various dishes you will be ok, they will bring with the meal dips, salad, bread etc.

After the meal I would then recommend that you go to a place in Sharm called Fantasia, taxi should cost you approx LE30 maximum, and here you will be able to finish off your night watching an Egyptian dance show.

Enjoy and let me know how it all goes.

lol... hi mal... i take it youve never been! na ama bay has an entire row of little restaurants/cafes right down its middle! there all good!!

if you walk right down to the far end (where pizza hut is) and then turn left, there is another row of restaurants that seem to specialise in different foods (ie fish.. beef etc).

the only restaurant id recommend individually is the columbus, opposite fantasia, it sells burgers and chips etc... but like NOTHING youve ever had before... like the best home cooked food your mum could never make!

which hotel are you staying in?

oh, and btw, miss sharm is right.. the old market area of sharm is much better... more for the locals.

also.. if you do go to fantasia... be aware of the price.. not only is it one price for the locals and one for the tourist... its different for each tourist.. they'll take what they can get off you. i'd recommend you go there for the dancing and the horse show.. but dont eat there... its good food, but not worth the money.

Thanks guys,
Yes believe it or not I was out in Sharm a few weeks ago for the first time (but staying at an all inclusive)so didn't venture out too much apart from the quad biking, etc, we fell in love with the area and especially for me the diving and bought a half built villa in 'Hadaba'. We had no intention of buying there but felt it was a great opportunity and a bargain.
We have to go out next Thursday to complete on the purchase. I did go to 'Old Market' but only in the morning to go to the diving boat so didn't see much of it.
Columbus followed by Fantasia it is then - sounds great.
I'm staying at the Hilton Waterfalls in Hadaba this time on a b&b basis, so will be eating out every night.
I did go past the never ending restaurants in Nama (hopefully the right spelling) but after buying drinks in the first one (a coffee, a beer and a coke for my son) and being charged £10.00 it put me off in case I ended up with a £70. bill at the end so we ended up with McDonalds which I later regreted missing the experience we should have had.
We also had a salad lunch in a beach cafe at 'Sharks Bay' this was £30.00 which again if I had to buy dinner too for 7 days will soon add up. So basically I'm trying to learn the system to make it work for me especially since I will probably be spending a lot of time out there.
Do you think it is a good idea to let them know before entering that price is an issue for me, by saying to them "how much"? I don't mind paying £20.00 a head - but for a country where people are suppose to earn so little I'm not sure if I should be paying a lot more than that.
Anyway I'm very excited and can't wait to mingle with the locals and learn more about the culture.
Amanda, are you planning to live in Sharm after you are married?

Mal.. its spelled... Na ama.

i know what you mean about the price system.. it is far FAR more expensive to have a drink in those places.. i think they kinda charge for the service.

£20 a head is TOOOOOO much! in the columbus (which is tourist prices) i could have a main course and a desert and a drink for me and my 4 kids for around £20 TOTAL! (well.. the kids tended to share a main course between 2 as they were so big)!

in hadaba, you could have a good kofta meal for a couple of quid.

also.. if youre going with your son, take him to the hard rock cafe in Na ama bay.. me and the 4 kids ate there (and i had 2 cocktails) for less than £30. the same meal here would have been about £80... and the service was great (something which i look for).

as for letting them know... just ask them what they would recommend for around the price you want to pay.

(and dont forget to haggle)!

Hi Mrs C,

Sorry for my ignorance with regard to the spelling, I thought you were trying to write down the way it is pronounced by separating 'Na ama' into 2 parts. I've got it this time (I hope).
The Columbus is definately the place for me and I did have the 'Hard Rock Cafe' on my list of visits anyway as some people from my hotel recommended it last time to me.
I would really like to eat in one of the many 'Na ama Bay' restaurants but this time I will do what you say about them recommending something for a price, that way at the end of the meal they can't really go too overboard.
Where do you live - are you in England now?
How often do you visit Sharm?
Thanks for all of the great tips, I have taken them on board and can't wait to visit all of these wonderful places.
