Is there such a thing here? I am egyptian, born and raised in the US, living in Egypt now for a yr and a half, I have 3 kids and I am expecting InshaAllah in October. My kids were all born in New Jersey and now I am wondering if there were foreign midwives here in Egypt ( or certified modern egyptian ones) I am scared of the hospitals here and doctors, It's probably just my prejuduces but If I could located a certified nurse midwife here I would be so happy. I live in Hurghada now but if anyone knows of any CNMs in egypt or how to find one, please reply, Maybe a midwife in cairo knows of others here etc. Or if you have given birth in a hospital here in egypt please let me know, what was your experience? details? thanks a million worried in Hurghada Mona

Dear Mona, First of all I hope things will work out for you. How many months are you gone ? Don't you follow up with a doctor ? What about your previous pregnancies, did you deliver in hospitals or at home ? Do you normally give birth naturally or CS ? A pregnant lady normally follows up with a doctor and they agree on the hospital she wants. There are many clean hospitals such as Yussry Gohar's hospital in Roda, which I tried, and there is Shalaan Center, which I heard is expensive but is said to be the best there is. I don't recommend you'd go for any delivery at home because you never know what may happen, maybe the baby will need specialised help. At least do a sonar to make sure things are okay. Check shefa.com

Thanks for your concerned reply nelly, I am only 8 weeks along, in the process of finding an OB/GYN, All of my kids were born in a hospital, 2 ob's one midwife, all in the states. Thank God, I have normal natural deliveries. I am just trying to find out if the option of a midwife is available here and how to find it. Every search I do comes up with ancient egypt or other irrelevant info. Thanks for the site recomendation.

Midwives are available and you will find plenty of them in Hurghada but they are illiterate and they definitely don't follow healthy procedures, and given your upbringing and accent you will be viewed as the snob rich girl which you won't need at such times, they can help local women (uneducated) but not you. Be on the safe side and ask around about a good doctor. Though I hate to generalise, I don't recommend a female gynecologyist.

posted Ok I should clarify. In the US Midwives are Certified Nurses, modern and educated, not the "daya" they have here. I wonder why everyone here tells me to avoid a female gyno. what is that about?? I mean a real reason.

posted Hi, Mona, I am so happy that you are expecting. Listen, there is a great gyn in Cairo named Dr. Sherif Hamza. You will find his practice in Mohandseen, close to the Shooting Club and he also works at a nearby hospital. Sorry, I don't have numbers available. Couple of years ago he employed a British midwife. Try to get help from there. He is a fantastic doctor and many of his patients are foreign women. You will feel safe with him. Everything will be fine. Good luck with your delivery!

Just to be a voice of reason, almost all that information (about birth) is incorrect. A) A 'natural' birth isn't just a vaginal birth, it's a vaginal birth w/o meds, etc. B)Home birthed babies are infinitely safer than hospital birthed babies for a variety of reasons, including lack of medical management and intervention, and the lack of exposure to bacteria and viruses that cause all to frequent postnatal infections--and this is in the cleanest of hospitals. C) Sonars/ultrasounds are way overused and associated with developmental delays in the child. Why did I feel the need to say all that? To counteract the public image of birth that most of us have in our minds, so that the next generation might be able to take back the authority over their bodies from the lawsuit-driven medical community.

Maybe our moderator can help you..I'm not sure if she ended up delivering in Egypt or she went back to the States but there were some contacts offered to her on this site. If all you get is recommendations for doctors in Cairo, call them anyway and ask them to recommend someone who is in Hurgada.

If you will post your email address, I will send you some information about an OB who visits Hurghada from Cairo and is a professor at Cairo University-considered to be very senior. He should be able to answer questions for you. Also, could give you some other info as I have been researching childbirth options in the area (although maybe you already know).

Thanks Jenifer for your post, I am pregnant not sick! Im glad you posted that information, Pregnancy and birth are natural and when the mother is free of complications, there is no reason she needs to be in a hospital. I am not against a hospital birth, though I am also not against a home birth.

Hi Mona,
Congratulations!! I am 4 months pregnant with my third child. We just returned to Egypt a few weeks ago from NY and I will deliver here. I am in Cairo. I found a great female OB/GYN. She treats many Americans here so she is familiar with our "demands" LOL. Certified midwives are hard to find here. There is a member here named Silke/Tata who knows a European lady in Alex. Some doctors will allow you to have the birth you want. You have just have to be firm and tell them what you want. Episiotomies are routine and will put you under general anesthesia (yes GAS!) when the baby is crowning. It will help to have a female friend with you, depending on the hospital you choose, your husband will not be allowed in the room with you. He'll have to wait outside the hospital with all the other chain-smoking husbands LOL. Make sure your husband or friend knows exactly what you want, no drugs etc, so that they can talk to the doc if you can't. Jen is absolutely right but homebirths can be tricky because you will need a birth certificate to show the embassy in order to get your child's passport. But you can always go to the hospital right after and say "OOPS! The baby came too fast." Jen is also correct about the use of ultrasounds here. They are very inexpensive around 50 LE and some doctors want to do one at EVERY visit.
Don't worry so much about the hospitals. There are many different rooms to choose from. You can get a very basic ie bring your own sheets, toilet paper,etc. to a deluxe suite with a kitchen or lounge area. It depends on your budget. You will labor in one room and then deliver in another room. You can arrange to take a tour of the hospital beforehand.

I don't understand why they wont allow the fathers there? don't they want to be there? Its just me who is showing so why not let him in? a female with me is ok??

About the gas, some docs say that when the baby is crowning your body takes over and you don't really need to push that hard so they give the gas at that moment to sort of "help" relieve any pain you have. "They say it doesn't affect the baby. *shrugs* I don't know about that. Most Egyptian men do not attend the births of their babies, it is mostly the women of the family who help the mother. Most men are shooed away. One doctor asked me "Why do you want your husband seeing you like that?" Remember during our mother's and grandmother's time(in the US) men did not attend the births of their babies either. There is a hospital here in Nasr City that most of the American women go to and they have recently changed their policy and will allow the husbands to be with their wives, but only for the American women because this is something that they always ask (DEMAND) about. A female with you should be OK. My doctor will not allow my husband to be with me. It is OK for me because 1. he will be taking care of the other kids 2. I really trust her and 3. he was really scared the last time( something about me screaming to loudly and writhing in pain on the hospital waiting room floor) and forgot everything he learned at the Bradley classes so he was not really a big help LOL.

Lol shumza about your husband. I for one wouldnt want anyone else I know to see me like that besides my husband. It takes 2 to concieve the baby and they should both be present at the birth. I won't worry about it until someone says he can't come in. (why not just make it optional, I don't get the NOT ALLOWED thing) anyway, I thank you for all your insight and have to say this board has been very helpfull. Thanks again to all.

If you really, really push the issue, the doctor and the hospital might allow him to be with you. Just be prepared to hear NO. I hope all goes well with you. Please keep us updated on your situation
