I loved digla ... it is beautiful so lush yet everything was accessible. Kimo market, Gom3ah (now seuoudi) a few pubs one owned by kim ( a nice Vietnamese lady who owns koreana) Golden Bell (name changed now) .. owned by mr. chow the Olympic swimming pool nearby road 9 mermaid restaurant . They have delicious pizza and cold beer.
The maadi Nadi . Tennis swimming
Digla was just a reprieve from it all green .. quiet beautiful mango trees
Guava trees
Orange Trees
The people there were:
Beautiful Ambitious Playful And I could go on and on but I would sound like 'bourgeoisie'.

By co-incedence somebody took me to Maadi last month, but I didn`t see the things you`ve described. Of course I am not that familiar in neighbourhoods, but I think Korba is the nicest I know.

Live there ????? and maybe you might love it. Don't compare it to the U.S or Europe but to where you are living.

Maybe, who knows? I never should live fulltime in Egypt, because there is to much connecting me home. But in a strange way there is to much in Egypt also, so it could be possible that one day I need a place for my own over there. I`m quite busy with a lot of everything, so who knows what ways I shall walk in future. It is a small world, and my view is open...

I lived in Maadi from 1999-2004 and I've visited it about a half-dozen times since then. I totally agree - Maadi has changed a lot. The very first time I visited it in the early 90's many paved roads (presently) were actually dirt roads back then. I have a very fond memory of being lost in Maadi and the taxi-driver was asked by locals 'what brought you here', we were so lost and he had a wonderful reply "allah gabah l'masr wa'howa gabny lokum' (God brought him to Egypt and he brought me to you )
Things have changed a lot and some places I mentioned are not as great now as they were back in 2000. The pubs for example are patronized by certain 'undesirables' whereas back in 2000 many western foreigners enjoyed themselves. It seems 9-11 played a huge role in their demise. You know the Red Onion became a haven for Maadites from the 'sex trade' practiced in other places.
Prostitutes are strictly prohibited from entering such a premise smilarly to many other places throughout Cairo. I remember when Golden Bell used to serve authentic Korean food cooked by a real Korean Chef/Cook.
Maadi is clearly not what it used to be. It is true that many Egyptians and many 'comfortable' foreignors left especially families. Sadly replaced by single men, refugees and others who hoard money rather than spend.
It is also a shame that so many villas were demolished and replaced by 10-15 story buildings. Shame what transpired in Sakanat-al-Maadi.
And I also agree despite all the woes it is still a tranquil enclave and unmatched in Egypt.
If I were to live for 6months to 1 year I might very well opt for Zamalek, but for longer than that I need tranquility from the 25 million Cairense. People wise Maadites are beautiful people. It is apparent by their demeanor. Good homes and good families and it is evident.
I reckon when you lived there it was paradise

South London, are there really any area in Cairo that is not safe? Cairo is definately safer than most Western and European cities. Even the run-down areas in Cairo are not plagued with constant violence one sees in other major cities. Have you ever seen anybody get robbed in Cairo at gunpoint?

Well, I am kinda partial to 6th of October, even though I love most parts of Zamalek and Maadi - the traffic/parking there would drive me crazy. Been living here in 6th of October since Nov 2005, and its clean, breezy, easy to drive, and QUIET ! When me & hubby first spoke about retiring, we both thought that this area would save our sanity versus living inside of Cairo. Although now that I have seen Al Rehab, I really like it there too. I love Ain Sukhna and Hurghada and Alex for visiting, but can't see myself actually living there. Jean

Al Rehab city is recommended, as it is nice and quiet but has all the amenities that you need e.g. mosques, church, banks, international schools, european style supermaket, numerous other small grocery shops, hairdressers, opticians, doctors. KFC,Pizza Hut, Hardees etc. There is a home delivery service for any of the shops at a cost of approx. 10p per delivery! Its very clean and safe. It has an internal bus service and also a bus service to the area of City Stars shopping mall, which is about 20-25 minutes distance for only about 20p each! There is a wide mix of nationalities living there which I think is great.

Topic: Your favorite neighborhood in Egypt.
As a single I'll definitely would go for Zamalek.
Having a family puts things into a different perspective - I say Maadi.

Tigerlily is correct. Having a family would give Maadi the edge over Zamalek unless you can afford Gezira I prefer the "island" setting over Maadi. For example I like having a home directly adjacent to the Nile, with a yard leading to the water itself; instead of having the corniche road like in Maadi. The current traffic also makes Maadi a miserable commute at times. Crime is not an issue in either area, so even though Gezira and Zamalek have about 10 times the armed guards of Maadi, I wouldn't say Maadi is less safe

Graf_Genn, I would say crime is very very low in whole Egypt. Whenever I meet people who are interested in visiting Egypt I can only tell them over and over again how safe I always felt. People are just honest, friendly and peaceful - whether it's inside a city or in a village.
