We know how much they exist, so I thought perhaps we could share the misconception's we have heard (hopefully we can try to keep it clean)....

I honestly heard that many men in Egypt believe that having sex too much is bad for the man (physically).

What have you heard?

I’ve heard them say this lots of times: “Egyptian men, strong men.”
Still haven’t figured out what they actually mean. Good arm wrestlers? Good construction workers? Or do they refer to some lower body parts? [Roll Eyes]

In lots of parts of this world and in some other religions (it's mentioned in the Torah too) a woman is considered to be "unclean" during her period.

In the Arabic world it’s a popular misconception that women aren’t able to keep their lower instincts down. So if they have the chance, they’ll go looking for “fun” with any man that’s available. That’s why women need to be “protected” against their selves. And that’s probably why foreign women travelling without male company get so much unwanted attention in Egypt.
Although I’ve been in more Arabic countries, the attention was never so graphic like in Egypt. I still don't know what it is? Nile water polution?

This claim is used by the barbaric to support FGM so that the "loose" [Roll Eyes] woman gets tamed down by the knife.

Its such a shame that people are not more educated about FGM- women don't cheat because they need or want sex- they generally cheat for love and attention.

Over 90% of 'loose' women in Egypt are circumcised so they can 'control' their animalistic sexual instincts. That means a guy drills and drills and drills (after purchasing viagra first) and no orgasm happens on the desert of a weeded wife (sure, HOW?). So - here comes the myth of 'Egyptian men strength' which in fact is a sad necessity, from the beginning doomed with no happy ending.

Although FGM is seen in the Western world as an Islamic tradition, it’s actually African. In lots of other African countries, women with Christian or other religious backgrounds, are also often circumcised.
By the way: at the end of the 19th century European psychiatrists recommended FGM as a good remedy for “hysterical” women.

Just because a woman has sexual desires, that does not make her "hysterical". FGM is a VERY PAINFUL solution for any woman. There is no doubt about that. [Eek!]

[Confused]

Every woman that somehow didn’t fit in or didn’t want to fit into the European society of the late 19th century was considered to be “hysterical”. For instance: “loose” women, women suffering from PMS or depression, women that wanted to study, women that didn’t want to get married etc. Looks like there is a similarity to what happens nowadays in some societies that are more or less male-dominated. Like Egypt, for instance.

So, back to the subject: I think there must be a lot of sadness and sexual frustration among the Egyptian people. Maybe it’s time for a fresh wind, like in another North-African country as Morocco where the young (well he’s 45) king makes plenty of effort to better the position of women. But please, correct me if I’m seeing thing the wrong way.

Kleobatra, I thought FGM was just a african practice at first, then I found out it was practiced in the Middle East. Then, I thought it was first done by the arab socities, but realize it is mostly a african practice. Just because some women did not fit into or did not want to fit into the European society of the late 19th century, that was no reason to give them FGM. Whatever the women choose to do with their lives was their choice. They could not help it if they suffered from depression. Tell me, how would FGM help a woman suffering from depression? I would like this explained to me. I know, Kleobatra, that you do not believe that FGM would help a depressed woman, but I want to know how some people think that it would.

PLEASE, don't get me wrong! I think FGM is absolutely horrible and should be forbidden by law all over the world! In my opinion it has no other reason than to keep women down. I read FGM has as long history and it occurred in lots of times and places all over the world. Especially in societies where women are seen as a second rate human being.

In the late 19th century Europe plenty of changes where going on. Like going from a rural to an industrial society. Women having “real” jobs for the first time. Women stood up for their rights etc. And in the that time male-dominated society, men started to be afraid of women. So that time “scholars” tried to find proof that women were second rate. One of the explanations was that women simply had female organs. Freud’s infamous “penis envy” theory is an example of that. But you wouldn’t want to know what they did to “unruly” women in general. The life of the French sculptress Camille Claudell is a well know example of that.
At that time there were also lots of diseases they didn’t have any cure for. Depression occurs the most among women. So they probably thought FGM would be the solution.
There are some very interesting studies about the subject "hatred and fear towards women in the Victorian age", but it’s a bit too late at night for me to look up the titles. Have to go to work tomorrow, sorry.

Funny one I heard was that how many times it happened at the beginning of a marriage was the yard stick for the rest of the time, ie, if it was once a day at the start then the woman expected it to be like this always!

Kleobatra, goodnight. I'm sure that they did horrible things to "unruly" women in the Victorian age. The Victorian age was the prudish age, if you think about it. They had prudish ideas about how things should be and how life should be lived.
