This is Serious! This incident happened recently in North Texas .
A woman went boating one Sunday taking with her some cans of coke which she put into the refrigerator of the boat. On Monday she was taken to the hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit. She died on Wednesday.

The autopsy concluded she died of Leptospirosis. This was traced to the can of coke she drank from, not using a glass Tests showed that the can was infected by dried rat urine and hence the disease Leptospirosis.

Rat urine contains toxic and deathly substances. It is highly recommended to thoroughly wash the upper part of all soda cans before drinking out of them. The cans are typically stocked in warehouses and transported straight to the shops without being cleaned.

A study at NYCU showed that the tops of all soda cans are more contaminated than public toilets (i.e.).. full of germs and bacteria. So wash them with water before putting them to the mouth to avoid any kind of fatal accident.

FALSE! Micky please check the validity of your rumour-mongering stories BEFORE you post them and unnecessarily alarm people.

http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_leptospirosis_coke_can.htm

Comments: If you compare the two different variants above, one of which began circulating in 2002 and the other three years later in 2005 (with variants in between), you will find them identical except for the following features:

The first claims the woman became sick in Belgium, the second in North Texas.

The first refers to the disease as "Leptospirosis," the second calls it "Leptospirose."

The first claims a study in Spain showed that the tops of soda cans are "more contaminated than public toilets," the second says the study was done at "NYCU" (perhaps meaning NYU, or New York University).

Not to worry — neither version is true. Though rat urine certainly can transmit diseases that affect humans (if the rat itself is a carrier of said diseases), the urine itself is not inherently toxic or rife with "deathly substances."

There is no record in standard medical research databases of a study conducted at NYU, NYCU, or anywhere else comparing the cleanliness of soda cans with that of public toilets.

Soda cans are typically stored and shipped in shrink wrap or cardboard cases, so they're not necessarily the first place one should expect to encounter dried rat urine contamination.
Though relatively rare, leptospirosis is a real and potentially life-threatening disease which can be transmitted via rat urine and feces (or that of other animals). However, all of the cases reported in Texas over the past several years affected the canine population only.

This rumor is very similar to, and may have been inspired by, another text warning of deadly diseases transmitted via rat urine or droppings on soda cans which has circulated since 1999.

It does make sense not to drink from a can. I mean you wouldn't eat an apple either you haven't washed before, would you??

You can't be careful enough about cleaness and safety if you worship good health.

It took only 20 seconds in a Google search. It is best to take a minute to confirm details instead of posting false rumours.

Maybe not true but a very valid point!!
Have you seen some of the stock rooms of shops (especially here in Egypt) where they keep soda cans? UGH!!!!!
Micky doesn't need to be flamed for this.... it's still a valid point!
BTW, who knows if the glasses are clean? the safest way to drink soda is through a straw out of a can.... it's what I always do here in Egypt!

Well I never would accuse Micky as being a rumor monger...or anything of the sort.

I got the same email as she did and passed it to all my family and friends...because even it were not true..it was still a good enough example to make people think before they drink from an unwashed can!

I sit and wonder why it is that even a simple helpful post can cause someone to start on a tirade...sheesh.

Read it...if you don't like it...move on to something else.

Ok I've had my say for the month [Smile] )

I wash ALL cans (not just soda, but veggies, tuna and stuff too), before opening and pouring the contents into a glass/bowl/pan. [Big Grin]

You never know where the outside of those cans have been. Heck they could have been stacked in an open crate where a lazy dock worker decided to relieve his bladder.
