They always have been, Egyptians abroad just need to go to their local Egyptian consulate to vote. In the past all that was required was a passport. Now that is void due to this new policy.

Only difference now is the vote requires a "new national identity card" which is not issued to Egyptians abroad. Egyptians abroad must come back to Egypt to apply and receive their national identity cards. Meaning the government won't mail the identity cards out of the country, nor allow family to mail the national identity cards overseas or carry them enroute via a traveler.

Therefore it is just make it more difficult for Egyptians abroad to vote.

Egyptians abroad might vote with their new foreign brains, or the national identity card would end up in the wrong hands and a non-Egyptian would vote instead at Egyptian consulates.

Same mentality of Amen Memes when he tossed a compliant, friendly and frightened dog off a roof of a building. Foreign dog gets tossed and Egyptians abroad get tossed off the vote registers too.

It made sense up to here. Don't you think the Egyptian consulates would check the cards as they will have a picture of the correct person on, just like a passport does. And why would a non-Egyptian in another country even want to vote in Egypt's elections?

If you read the article Ayisha you'll notice that they stated National Identification Cards will be checked to verify identity not passports.

And you are forgetting the excuse the NDP had for not working with the pro-democracy protesters before babaMu stepped down. Xenophobia all the way.

Please if you want to argue just make personal attacks about my family, me as a person so forth like usual.

My ex and I had plans to go down to Chicago to have him vote at the Egyptian consulate and sign some legal paperwork before we found out that his passport is useless at an election poll, he must have a national identity card to vote.

So my ex went back to Egypt during all the ruckus and got his national identification card and will go down to Chicago to vote at the Egyptian consulate later his year.

Personal experience is a great informer!

If you read what I wrote I wasn't saying they could use passports, I was saying your post made no sense as the ID card has their photo on 'just like a passport does'
Still doesn't explain why you seem to think someone else could vote in his place, the PHOTO is on the ID card and he should have an ID card anyway, the article doesn't say "NEW national ID card"

What does this have to do with your ex not having an ID card?

Why? Can't you handle a direct question about BS you write?

So where was his ID card? ALL Egyptians should have one even those abroad with 'foreign brains'

Your ex has never been back since he escaped, swore he would never go back not even to see his child and now you're claiming he went back to get an ID card so he can vote in the US?? I hope he managed to see his daughter while he was there and told her who he was, shame he LEFT HER THERE in all the ruckus though.

Former president Hosni Mubarak 'could face death penalty', says Egypt's justice minister
By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 5:05 PM on 30th April 2011
Comments (0) Add to My Stories Ousted Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak could face the death penalty if he is convicted of ordering the shooting of protesters during the uprisings which brought him down, the country's justice minister said today.

Mohammed el-Guindi told the daily Al-Ahram newspaper that Mr Mubarak, his two sons and wife are also facing allegations of corruption.

Anti-government protestors wave their shoes in a gesture of anger against President Hosni Mubarak on February 1. More than 800 people were killed during the uprising
He added that former first lady Suzanne Mubarak will be questioned for the first time in a few days over her illicit amassing of wealth.
Mr El-Guindi blamed Mr Mubarak for the country's widespread corruption during his almost 30-year rule.
Mr Mubarak, 82, stepped down in February and was placed under arrest in the Sharm el-Sheikh hospital due to heart problems.
MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD IN RUNNING FOR PARLIAMENT
The Muslim Brotherhood today said it will contest up to half the parliamentary seats in elections scheduled for September.

But the group said it will not field a candidate for the position of president.

The Muslim Brotherhood is regarded as the most organised political force in Egypt after the ousting of Hosni Mubarak and the dissolution of his party.

In a statement issued after a meeting of its decision-making shura (consultative) council, the group said it had decided to contest 'between 45 and 50 per cent of parliament's seats'.

Since Mubarak's rule was ended by a mass uprising, the Brotherhood has stated that it does not seek power.
The group is viewed with suspicion by Washington but is regarded as the only truly organised bloc in Egypt.

Though formally banned under Mubarak, it was tolerated as long as it did not challenge his power.

The Brotherhood is an Islamist group founded in the 1920s and has deep roots in Egypt's conservative Muslim society.

At least 846 protesters were killed during the uprising.

'Certainly, if convicted for the crime of killing protesters, it could result in the death sentence,' said Mr el-Guindi.

He added that the key to the case was whether former interior minister Habib el-Adly, also under investigation, would testify that Mr Mubarak had given the order to open fire on the protesters.

'The only one capable of pardoning Mubarak... would be the new president,' said Mr el-Guindi.

'If I were the president, I will not pardon him for killing 800 martyrs.'

Egypt will hold new presidential elections in November.

The minister also blamed Mr Mubarak for engendering a culture of corruption in the government and said the former president's wealth came from gas exports to Israel, through a company owned by a personal friend, and arms deals.

Mrs Mubarak will also be investigated, the minister added, with the first questioning to take place in the next few days at the Sharm el-Sheikh Hospital where the former president is convalescing.

The former first lady, who was involved in a number of high- profile charitable ventures, is suspected of illegally amassing wealth through her non-governmental organisations.

Petition for Egyptians abroad to vote by passport, birth certificate or national ID

Dear fellow Egyptians,

You may have heard that Egypt’s transitional government is in the process of officially granting the right to vote to Egyptian citizens who live abroad or who will be abroad during the time of the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections. You may also be aware that most likely, the voting process will require a current Egyptian national identification card and its associated number. Unfortunately for many of us, the only way to obtain the national ID or to renew an expired one from now until the time of the first elections is to make a visit to Egypt. As elections are expected in September, this creates stringent time constraints and places a high cost on obtaining a national ID card, and by extension, on exercising our right to vote that will shortly be guaranteed by law. With these constraints, many Egyptians will not be able to vote. As it is now going to be their legal right, it is incumbent upon the government to ensure that no undue barrier or burden prohibits or discourages them from doing so.

Therefore, this letter (linked below), addressed to Egypt’s Prime Minister, Dr. Essam Sharaf, will be delivered to him directly. It will also be hand-delivered in-person to Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Nabil Elaraby, at a scheduled meeting late this spring. The letter requests that the government take steps to ensure that Egyptians abroad are able to vote with a current Egyptian passport or birth certificate, if they do not hold a current national ID. This will be crucial to allowing many of us to participate in the political process.

If you feel strongly that the right to vote is an inalienable right of any citizen, please take a minute to sign your name on the letter. We are striving to collect at least one million signatures to present to the current Egyptian military council, and Prime Minister Essam Sharaf, as well as by meeting directly and submitting to Mr. Nabil Elaraby at a conference scheduled late in the Spring. We need to present compelling evidence that there are many Egyptians abroad who would exercise the right to vote when granted, and that many Egyptians living at home expect the electoral process to incorporate the voices of their compatriots who are abroad. Please navigate to the letter and sign, and also share with all your friends.

Long live Egypt!
