Originally posted by Toofaan: [QB] Dear friends! Are Egyptians arabs? I personally do not think so. We know Egyptians have a very long history and their civilization predates the time which arabs could not even imagine of! There is no doubt that not only Egyptians but all the nations in the world have come to contact with each other throughout the centuries in the past either through territorial conflicts or tarding. Those conflicts and contacts have made it possible for cultural values to be exchanged and passed to each other in many cases but in none of those events which preceded the attack of arabs to Egypt, the language of Egyptians or their religion was the target of attack. Egyptians have had their own language and culture and their civilization was far more progressive than any arab could imagine. What did Egyptians gain by giving up their language and become arabs? I am an Iranian who came to this board just by accident! We all know that Iranians and Egyptians have a lot in common and share a lot historically. About 2500 years ago, Cyrus reached to your territory in the process of his expansionism which was a common trend among rulers in those days but I have not heard of imposition of any of the Persian cultural values or religion to Egyptians at that time. neither I have heard anything about imposition of cultural values by Egyptians to other nations which they came in contact with at any time. My question is if "humanitarian values" of arabic culture called islam was so overwhelming then why the competing civilizations like Romans and Greeks which did not come in contact with arabic cultural values progressed and flouriched ragrding humanitarian values during time but Egyptians and other civilizations which were destroyed by arabs to give them a god remained behind? Why is the notion of "rule by the people" is hard to grasp among all of our nations which have been effected by attack of arabs in one way or another? Don't we deserve democracy? respect? what is holding us back from the civilized world? Take a look at our islamic world! is this "westerners" fault that we are all miserable and busy with our prayers while the rest of the world is moving with speed of light? or is it something that we should know about ourselves? are we really the best people of the world? What happened that we are left behind from the civilized world? there are a lot of questions which should be addressed and I believe the first thing that every Egyptian as well as every Iranian should be aware of, is their true national identity which has it's roots in their history not their religion! arabs, who were not tallented enough to learn any other language, pushed others to speak in their language so they can control them better after they conquered their territories. as a result, Egyptians became arab speaking nation like others in the same region. and they not only lost their language but also their national identity! up to a point which a great leader like Jaml Abdol-Naser becomes propagator of arab league and arab cause! isn't it time yet for Egyptians to think of their true national identity? why shouldn't we stay Egyptians, Iranians, etc.. no matter the religion? has speaking arabic made arab speaking nations a strong union? has islam made islamic nations a strong union? I do not believe the answer is positive in either case! best wishes [/QB]
