They have been oppressed by the Turks and the Persians as well as Iraqi Arabs(BTW, they were gassed by Saddam Hussein for siding with Iran in the Iran-Iraq war). As I pointed out earlier, the British negligently drew up borders for the regions of the former Ottoman empire without taking into consideration the ethnic differences in each region.
