Can somebody explain this to me? What exactly is a molecular clock?

The essential idea is based on the observation that errors in DNA replication [mutations] occur at regular intervals.

These are then used as a timing device, or clock, to help date lineages in population genetics.

Maybe I will start a thread on the Nile Valley forum with detailed information.

To add,

The molecular clock does not always follow a 'natural pattern'. It can / may be triggered by disaster, environment, food, and the natural patterns of things albeit based on 'chaos theory'.
