Originally posted by Djehuti: [QB] ^ Indeed, the genetic findings show African affinities and NOT Eurasian affinities, but the issue is hair form. Again, nobody is saying the Egyptians didn't have ulotrichous or coiled 'kinky' hair. What we are saying is that even Egyptians with loose wavy hair are just as much African! loose hair form itself has NOTHING to do with Eurasians or foreign admixture!
Originally posted by Truthcentric: [qb] BTW, I doubt there are many genetically pristine Saharan Africans around today, as the region has indisputably experienced migrations from both directions in the last two millennia. Aboriginal Saharans may have indeed independently evolved wavy hair, but Arabs and other West Eurasians have historically penetrated so deep into the Sahara that it would be tough to tell whether or not wavy-haired Saharans living today necessarily have Eurasian admixture. [/qb]
I disagree with this exaggerated penetration of the Sahara. Many Eurocentric scholars have also made the same argument however, the Sahara is a very vast area larger than the U.S. in size, and all the invasions as historically documented mainly affected the Mediterranean coasts and the northern areas of the Sahara. The central and especially southern areas have remained unaffected or untouched by foreigners. It's true some nomad groups did assimilate foreigners especially Eurasian slaves into their numbers per sources cited by Dana of Berbers taking in concubines. There are also some Berber tribes who intermarried with Arabs in Morocco, Mauritania, Mali etc. and the same occurred in northern Sudan, but what of all the other Saharan groups that remained endogamous like the Tobou of Libya and what about Chadic speakers in Chad in Niger, the Bilma etc. Even those with foreign ancestry can be distinguished by their relatively light or even fair complexions while many groups in the deep desert still have very dark complexions and in some cases like people in Chad and Niger even stereotypical "negroid" features despite the loose hair forms.
[qb]If the wavy hair of mainland Australians had anything to do with North Eurasian admixture, then these hypothetical North Eurasians apparently skipped New Guinea to get to Australia. Furthermore, if less curly hair is associated with cooler temperatures or lower UV, that doesn't explain why the Tasmanian aborigines had woollier hair despite living in a relatively cool environment far from the tropics. If we want to argue over whether straighter hair in Africa requires Eurasian input, we need to figure out the exact adaptive significance of different hair textures in the first place. [/qb]
I still think wavy hair has to do with arid environs while kinky hair is associated with more humid environs. Papua New Guinea is humid rain forest while mainland Australia is predominantly desert, but then Tasmania is subtropical rain forest. [/QB]
