Southerly signal goes back to Hora Woman. The northerly one to Malawi 5200 years ago. A modern signal strong in West Africa from the Gulf of Guinea northward to the savanna permeates East Africa.
There are Khoi, 'Nuba', Atlantic West Africa, and San elements, all 4 found in Holocene Malawi.
Anomalously, a Fula Amazigh signal also runs throughout. Also Herero physically are where Botswana, Namibia, and Angola meet. Genetically they are more seamless between Kenya and Cameroon.

Physically that's open canopy forest and wooded savanna.
But I was talking about where I placed Herero in the graph.
And yes you could describe some of Herero's 'land' as a sahel.
Herero aren't E Afr now. I included them to emphasize the yellow sweep.
