I'm an American and I have to say I agree. I try to look at issues from an objective point of view. Most recently, I was reading up on the newest developments with North Korea. Bush is demanding that they disarm all nuclear weapons on the peninsula.
North Korea's Foreign Ministry responded with this a big fat NO, that the weapons are "for self-defense to cope with the Bush administration's evermore undisguised policy to isolate and stifle" its government.
Previously, Bush stated (referring to the US) in his inaugural address "It warms those who feel its power, it burns those who fight its progress and one day this untamed fire of freedom will reach the darkest corners of our world,"
Wow! That statement struck me as deeply disturbing. It seems almost napoleonic, tyrannical. If I were North Korea I would keep my weapons.
As any country or people, we Americans do have the right to protect ourselves from terrorist acts. But what right do Americans have to instill our style of government and commercialism in cultures that obviously do NOT want it? Here have some "freedom", some Pepsi and a McDonalds!
How successful is our government really? We have the highest crime rate of any nation, by a long shot.
So far the only answers I have are these: our government no longer represents the majority of our people because it is corrupt and elitist. AND so many voters are ignorant, uneducated, and terrified. Bush and his henchmen raise the terror alert as they see fit to meet their needs, to stay in power.
I realize these two statements are a bit of a contradiction. But I'm still working it out in my head...
