Egypt rejects political condition set by the European side Egypt-European Union, Politics, 6/13/2006
Before leaving for Luxembourg, Minister Abul- Gheit said Egypt hoped to have neighborhood policy plan signed during the ministerial meeting but issues raised at the political, economic and security levels required further negotiations.
He called for holding Egypt's the ministerial council annually at this level so that decisions beneficial to both sides could be taken.
The Foreign Minister said that he believes that domestic political reform should emanate from the Egyptian concepts, renewing Egypt's rejection of political conditions set by the European side.
Abul -Gheit said the issue of immigration and the movement of labour and individuals into and out of EU states and getting the right of visit were among obstacles hindering the conclusion of neighbourhood policy agreement, calling on the EU to extend facilities in this regard.
He said good neighborhood policy is an EU offer for developing relations with states having association' agreements' with the EU, adding this policy agreement would facilitate entry of Egyptian commodities and services to EU markets as an initial step towards establishing a free trade zone.
Among the other issues to be discussed by the ministerial meeting are the commitment of both sides to the implementation of all items of the association agreement signed by them, Egypt's call for rendering the Middle East region free of weapons of mass destruction, the need for Israel's accession to nuclear arms non-proliferation treaty and the right of all countries to peacefully use nuclear energy.
