POL-EGYPT-IRAN-KHATAMI Mubarak to receive former Iranian president
CAIRO, March 25 (KUNA) -- Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will receive former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami who will start a visit to Egypt on Monday.
During his visit, Khatami will take part in the 19th annual conference of the Higher Council of Islamic Affairs, due here on Tuesday, Egypt's Middle East News Agency quoted Minister of Waqfs (Islamic endowments) Mahmoud Handi Zaqzouq as saying.
With dozens of Muslim and foreign scholars attending, the conference will deal with the cultural and social aspects of the problems of the Moslem world under globalization.
Khatami, chairman of the International Center for Dialogue of Cultures and Civilizations, will deliver a speech to the conference and two lectures at Alexandria and Al-Azhar universities Thursday.
He is also scheduled to meet several Egyptian government officials.
Severed since the Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979, the Egyptian-Iranian diplomatic relations was some warmth in the recent years, especially in the commercial, economic and cultural fields, however short of full normalization. (end) rg.gb.

I've always liked Khatami. Had loads of hope for Iran when he was in office. I wouldn't doubt that Khatami had to invite himself to Egypt, but knowing his style and personal strength and wisdome he knew it was time to bridge the Shiite and Sunni world. He is one of my favorite Middle East Leaders.
