Nile Basin Initiative Project to Cost 200 Billion U.S. Dollars
The Ethiopian Herald (Addis Ababa) NEWS March 29, 2007 Posted to the web March 30, 2007 Addis Ababa
The projects expected to be carried out within the framework of the Nile Basin Initiative will cost 200 billion US dollars within the coming 30 years. Egyptian Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Mahmoud Abu Zeid said last Monday.
According to an Egyptian State Information Service statement issued Tuesday, the joint vision of the Initiative will be finalized in two or three years and it will include the establishment of dams, power line and other projects.
Abu Zeid said at a workshop organized by the National Planning Institute on trade and investment cooperation among the Nile Basin countries that a committee grouping Egypt, Ethiopia, Uganda and Sudan will meet late in April to lay down the final framework of cooperation within the Initiative.
He called for forming a mechanism to put the recommendations of scientific conferences and workshops into development projects among the Nile-Basin states.
Head of the National Planning Institute Ola Hakim together with several Egyptian and African experts attended the workshop.
Isn't the Israelis paying for the Ethiopian dam on the Nile? Israel gets the vast majority of its government revenues from the USA so why are the Ethiopian making a big deal about this?
