Man Beaten To Death By Egyptian Police, Again

August 3, 2007 1:17 p.m. EST
Manar Ammar - AHN

Cairo, Egypt (AHN) - Egyptian police officers beat a man to death in Al Mansoura, a town in the Nile Delta region this past Tuesday, Al Masry Al Youm newspaper reported. Nasr Abdulah Al Sayeedi was the brother of a wanted man. Police held him and beat him in order to get his brother to turn himself in.

The villagers were shocked and grieved by the news, which led them to attack the police station, hurling stones and breaking windows.

The town is currently under siege by over 30 security trucks, armored cars and hundreds of soldiers. Over 70 men from the protesters were arrested after clashes between citizens and police continued until early Thursday.

Reports mentioned that police employed tear gas and live bullets and tens of people were transferred to a near by hospital with injuries sustained from the police actions.

Sayeedi, 35, a father of four girls heard screams from his modest apartment so he hurried only to find his mother on the floor and the police assaulting his wife and young daughters, eye witness told the newspaper.

"The officer nor the soldiers had mercy in their hearts, they dragged him [Sayeedi] onto the stairs in front of us, swearing and beating him furiously, until he was put in the police car," Hanem Al Saied, victim's neighbor told reporters.

After the victim arrived at the police station, the officers continued assaulting him until he was unconscious.

"We went to the police station to ask about him and maybe bail him out, [but] the officers refused to tell us about his condition and when we found him laying unconscious under a table, the police officer refused to call an ambulance so we carried him out by force to the emergency room where the medics there told us he was suffering from internal bleeding in the brain and must be operated on immediately," Amr Fatahy, victim's lawyer said.

Sayeedi died in the hospital the following day.

The torturing and the killing of civilians continues despite the community out cry to end it. They have urged the Ministry of Interior to prevent such actions from occurring. Many human rights organization say that these actions are taking place under the sight and protection of the minister himself.

Egypt police 'using cash to avoid murder charge'

August 7, 2007

CAIRO -- Egyptian police are trying to buy the silence of relatives of a man allegedly beaten to death in police custody in the hope of avoiding prosecution, an Egyptian rights organization claimed Tuesday.

Nasser Ahmed Abdullah died after police detained him in his village of Telbanah in the Nile Delta July 31, a security source said, with unnamed men subsequently offering Abdullah's family money not to bring charges.

"The perpetrators are trying to have impunity and that is usually how they do it when an incident like this happens," Gamal Eid of the Arab Network For Human Rights Information said.

Police had detained Abdullah in the hope of getting his brother to hand himself in for questioning on drug-related charges, the source said.

His family said that while in detention police allegedly tortured and beat him unconscious before taking him to hospital where he died.

The security source said that three Telbanah policemen had been suspended pending an investigation into Abdullah's death after the family brought charges.

Media attention means that the case would now likely not be dropped even if the so-called blood money were paid, although any eventual punishment would be quashed.

According to rights group Amnesty International torture in detention is systematic in Egypt and, in the majority of cases, the perpetrators are not brought to justice.

Three Egyptian Police Officers Charged With Abuse And Murder

September 10, 2007 5:59 a.m. EST

Joseph S. Mayton - AHN Middle East Correspondent
Cairo, Egypt (AHN) - The general prosecutor in Mansoura, a town north of Cairo, has transferred an officer and two fellow soldiers being investigated for allegedly torturing and killing a man to a criminal court. They were charged with torturing a man and fraud in connection with a warrant.

The investigation began when the family of the victim accused the police officers of causing the death through their excessive force, which the family called torture and rights groups in the country corroborated.

On July 31, the three men wanted to arrest a man in the town when that man's brother intervened. The police officers dragged him down the stairs and beat him with a stick in public, All Headline News reported after the incident.

Police held him and continued beating the man at a police station in order to get his brother to turn himself in to police.

The following day the man died from wounds sustained on his head from the police attacks.

If convicted, the three police officers could face a jail term of up to 25 years.

The torturing and the killing of civilians have continued despite the community out cry to end it. They have urged the Ministry of Interior to prevent such actions from occurring. Many human rights organization say that these actions are taking place under the sight and protection of the minister himself.
