Obama singled them out in his State of the Union speech, in saying that they needed to outdo or beat the Chinese in mathematics, science and technology. It seems that this segment of the speech has become a subject of sensationalism across American news outlets.
Is this the unraveling of another cold war, and/or the beginnings of strategic framing of China as a "superpower" by the American aristocracy? If not, then what else is at work here?

The latter question is interesting given the CIA's listing of crimes done by the Chinese government a year or so back. If i recall though, the Chinese responded with a list of their own.
For sure, Obama was respecting the Chinese's hard work.

Whatbox, there does seem to be an intensification of exchanges of heated rhetoric between the governments of US and China, particularly with the unraveling of the latest global economic slump. Perhaps, the attention towards China in the State of the Union speech is just another expression of this.
I think there is also something to the last two posts; some observers have even described China as essentially a "giant with feet of clay".
