Welcome to the 'low life', Paris!!!!

Paris Hilton going to jail for 45 days

By DAISY NGUYEN, Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES -
Paris Hilton worked as a farmer and maid on her TV show "The Simple Life." Now she's facing a real-life hardship in her latest role: jail inmate.

Hilton, who parlayed her name and relentless partying into worldwide notoriety, was sentenced Friday to 45 days in county jail for violating probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case by driving with a suspended license.

As an inmate, she might have to spend most of her day in a cell smaller than her closet — her only luxury escape a short period to shower, watch TV, exercise or talk on the phone.

"I'm very sorry and from now on I'm going to pay complete attention to everything. I'm sorry and I did not do it on purpose at all," Hilton, 26, told a judge before the sentencing.

Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer, saying "there's no doubt she knew her license had been suspended," ordered that Hilton report to a women's jail in suburban Lynwood by June 5.

The judge's ruling did not allow any work release, furloughs, use of an alternative jail or electronic monitoring in lieu of jail. Nor could Hilton pay to serve time in a jail of her choice, as some are allowed.

Hilton left the courtroom with her parents, Kathy and Rick, and headed straight to their car. She looked forward and didn't speak to a crush of reporters and photographers shouting questions at her.

Her mother was visibly upset.

"This is pathetic and disgusting, a waste of taxpayer money with all this nonsense. This is a joke," Kathy Hilton said of the judge's decision.

Defense attorney Howard Weitzman said he would appeal.

"I'm shocked, I'm surprised and really disheartened in the system that I've worked in for close to 40 years," Weitzman said.

He said the sentence was "uncalled for, inappropriate and bordered on the ludicrous."

"I think she's singled out because of who she is," Weitzman said.

City attorney spokesman Nick Velasquez said that the judge's ruling "sends a clear message that in the city of Los Angeles, no one is above the law."

Hilton pleaded no contest in January to reckless driving stemming from a Sept. 7 arrest in Hollywood. Police said she appeared intoxicated and failed a field sobriety test. She had a blood-alcohol level of .08 percent, the level at which an adult driver is in violation of the law.

She was sentenced to 36 months probation, alcohol education and $1,500 in fines.

Two other traffic stops and failure to enroll in a mandated alcohol education program landed her back in court.

Should she report to the Century Regional Detention Center, Hilton will be living in a one- or two-person cell as a high-profile inmate, segregated from the general population for her own safety.

Her cell would be spartan: 12-by-8 feet with a toilet, sink and a window 6 inches wide, said Capt. Alice Scott, who oversees the 2,200-inmate facility she describes as "a very nice place."

Hilton can expect to receive three low-sodium meals a day, with dinner the only hot meal.

Inmates in segregation are allowed outside their cells for at least an hour each day to shower, watch television in the day room, participate in outdoor recreation or talk on the telephone, Scott said. There are a bank of phones that use prepaid phone cards — cellular telephones and Blackberries aren't allowed.

She was ordered to report to the jail by the set date — or face 90 days behind bars.

Paris Hilton begs for jail pardon from 'Governator' Schwarzenegger
Last updated at 15:43pm on 8th May 2007

Jail bound Paris Hilton is calling on help from high above: the heiress has endorsed an online petition directed to California's "Governator" Arnold Schwarzenegger which begs for a pardon.

It was launched by her pal Joshua Morales in a desperate attempt to prevent the blonde heiress from serving her 45 day jail sentence.

Paris wrote on her MySpace page: "My friend Joshua started this petition, please help and sihn [sic] it."

"I urge all fans and supporters and all that are outraged by injustice to sign this petition."

Paris, 26, was arrested in February when she was found driving on a suspended license after she was charged with drink driving last September.

And following a Los Angeles court case on Friday, Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer ruled that socialite Paris was sentenced to serve 45-days in Century Regional Detention Facility in California starting on June 5.

The petition reads in part: "We, the American public who support Paris, are shocked, dismayed and appalled by how Paris has been the person to be used as an example that Drunk Driving is wrong. We do not support drunk driving or DUI charges. Paris should have been sober. But she shouldn't go to jail, either.

"She provides hope for young people all over the U.S. and the world. She provides beauty and excitement to (most of) our otherwise mundane lives."

The petition will be presented to Governor Schwarzenegger, who shot to fame as the star of Terminator before later turning his hand to politics, in its entirety before Paris is scheduled to start her sentence.

LOL [Big Grin]

I actually wonder how best pal (again) Nicole Ritchie will get away in the court system as she was picked up by police past December with DUI and even driving on the wrong side of the road! [Eek!]

Nicole Richie Pleads Not Guilty to Misdemeanor DUI

NICOLE RICHIE pleaded not guilty today to charges stemming from her arrest in December on suspicion of driving under the influence. The "Simple Life" star was charged last Friday with misdemeanor DUI.

Richie was not present at the Glendale Superior Court hearing in California; her defense attorney entered the plea on her client's behalf. A pre-trial hearing has been set for April 2.

In December, California Highway Patrol officer TODD WORKMAN told ET that Nicole was picked up after CHP responded to calls reporting that a vehicle was going in the wrong direction on the 134 freeway in Burbank.

When officers approached, they found Nicole alone in her SUV in the carpool lane. She was at a complete stop and facing the right direction. According to authorities, she failed standard field sobriety tests and was subsequently arrested.

Officer Workman also confirmed that Nicole admitted to police that she'd taken Vicodin and had smoked marijuana earlier in the day.

Nicole's booking sheet showed that the 5' 1", 85-pound reality star was booked in Glendale, California, and was later released.

After her arrest in December, her attorney HOWARD WEITZMAN issued the following statement to ET: "This is a difficult time for Nicole but she is prepared to accept whatever responsibility is appropriate. She intends to continue with her career and will deal with any other issues that need to be addressed."

Actually it would be a good thing to let Paris and Nicole share a cell together, they can just shoot a new sequel to the 'simple life' while serving the prison sentences .... [Big Grin]

Oh my I just saw they both have the same defense lawyer! Nicole, you know what that means!!!! [Eek!]

Paris Hilton's jail term halved for 'good behaviour'
Last updated at 14:55pm on 17th May 2007

 -
Good behaviour: Paris Hilton, in LA yesterday, has had her jail sentence reduced

Paris Hilton will serve around half of her 45-day jail sentence and will be separated from the general inmate population, authorities said.

The hotel heiress will spend about 23 days in a "special needs housing unit" at the Century Regional Detention Center in suburban Lynwood, Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

Her sentence was shortened after jail officials gave her credit for good behaviour, Whitmore said.

Officials considered several factors in calculating the credit, including that she appeared for her latest court date, he said.

The decision comes after pictures surfaced of Hilton appearing to smoke a joint at Coachella music festival, which took place just weeks before her court hearing.

Hilton will stay in a unit that contains 12 two-person cells reserved for police officers, public officials, celebrities and other high-profile inmates, he said.

Like everyone else in the 2,200-inmate facility, Hilton will get at least an hour outside her cell each day to shower, watch television, participate in outdoor recreation or talk on the telephone, he said.

The 26-year-old socialite was sentenced to jail this month for violating the terms of her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case.

A judge ordered her to report to jail by June 5.

A call to her lawyer, DUI specialist Richard Hutton, was not immediately returned.

Her publicist, Elliot Mintz, declined to comment.

Hilton's mother Kathy recently spoke out about her daughter's jail sentence: "We can only hope that something positive will come from all of this. Hopefully, young people who look up to people like Paris will learn from this."

Before it was said that the prison is too crowded and that's why she will not have to serve the full term.

Anyhow, *well done job* [Confused] for her lawyers so far. And I wonder if she will not have to go at all in the end..... we'll see.

In Defense of Paris
by Joshua Katz

I’d like to ask you to consider, if you would, two elements of "common wisdom" in the US today. They are:

1. Money can’t buy happiness.
2. Poor little rich girl (said with a dismissive tone.)

The former is, I think, true, although I don’t think it proves as much as those who say it seem to suspect. Having more money, all else being equal, gives you more options and the ability to pursue higher-valued ends, and so tends to contribute to happiness. However, all else is usually not equal; to have more money you have to do more work, work in a field you might not like as much, and save or invest more, which means putting off consumption. At many times, I have chosen less money, now and in the future, because I believed the opportunity costs of higher income were too high. So, while still desiring money, I can agree that money isn’t everything and that we cannot pursue happiness solely by predicting future money income.

The second statement above is a sarcastic, biting remark about rich people. It expresses the idea that a rich person who is upset by other aspects of their life is ungrateful, and an object of scorn and ridicule. Worse, it is an expression of jealousy. The speaker means to say "if I had all her money, you can bet I would be happy." These two ideas are, of course, contradictory. If money doesn’t buy happiness, there is no reason to think that the rich should always be happy. Certainly, one should not expect the rich to be happy while an oppressor is attacking, humiliating, and imprisoning them.

I bring up these topics because of the poisonous current mood in the United States. A vicious public assault has been launched on Paris Hilton, the Hilton heir, and there seem to be near-universal support for this assault. It is fashionable for the media, private individuals, and politicians everywhere to express their distaste for Paris. For some libertarians, this distaste has even overpowered opposition to the state.

Prior to her recent legal problems, public opinion was already solidly against Paris. She is criticized for not working – as if most of the speakers would continue to work at their current jobs if they suddenly inherited billions. I know I wouldn’t – I’d go back to grad school and spend the remainder of my life studying one subject after another. But that’s my preference – Paris prefers the party scene. Why begrudge her freely chosen preferences with her own money?

In any event, this widespread hatred erupted when Paris was arrested. Otherwise civilized people can be heard to make crude remarks, suggesting that being raped and beaten in jail might teach Paris "a lesson." What lesson is that? The very idea teaches me that envy is a powerful, although evil, emotion. I learn from these remarks that most of my fellow citizens consider inmates suitable agents of punishment, a curious position to take. By the way, isn’t it true that the guilty inmates would tend to be the most brutal in assaulting the weaker inmates, and the innocent would be disproportionately attacked? Moreover, why in the world would convicted criminals be appropriate agents of justice?

What is Paris being jailed for, exactly? She had the temerity to drive her own car, on roads paid for out of her taxes, after consuming more alcohol than the state approves of. For this crime, she received probation, with the attendant irony that probation generally requires employment. Her probation is now being revoked, on the grounds that she was caught driving with a suspended license. Of the many absurd laws we deal with on a daily basis, this may be the most absurd. The widespread acceptance of driving-licensing is strong evidence of the success of the education establishment in brainwashing the public. Perhaps a case can be made for licensing of, say, doctors. I wouldn’t accept this case, but I have an inkling of how it would go. Licensing of lawyers is to be expected – after all, we immediately see the state’s interest in making sure that all who work in the justice system are suitably "educated" in statism. But a license to drive your own car, on roads they tax you to pay for? This is simply an excuse to charge bureaucratic fees, and to make people carry identifying papers. That we accept this is a testament to the ability of the government to warp the minds of the citizenry.

So, for this non-crime, Paris Hilton is being sent to jail. The irony is palpable – a system supported by theft, which operates largely through threats and coercion, is presumed to be morally superior to a blonde who inherited some money and seems to laugh too much. These thugs will lock up a peaceful, if immature, young woman, while the population cheers and anticipates the horrific beatings she will receive. In our left-right political spectrum, opposing such a thing is called "lacking a moral compass."

Can the Paris haters point to one particular action of hers that is supposed to have harmed anyone? Yes, she made a TV show about her inability to hold a steady job – who cares? This certainly won’t put her on the welfare lines anytime soon, and making a tv show probably pays better than holding a steady job anyway. She entertains countless people, and has attacked no one. Yes, she had sex with her boyfriend, which of course puts her beyond the pale of normal teenage behavior – sure. She dresses sexy, also completely unusual behavior for a shapely blonde. Why hate her?

Celebrities tend to reject those arguments which most vindicate them. Paris, no doubt, would be horrified by an anarchist suggestion that those who murder, rape, and steal – the state – are not fit to judge and jail others. Instead, she told Governor Arnold that she was "too pretty to go to jail," inviting more ridicule from the Paris-haters. In attacking such a statement, though, they ignored one important point – she’s right. She is too pretty for jail. However, so is everyone else in the civilian world. There are plenty of people who have done something wrong – a few choice statements from Jesus come to mind here – but I am hard pressed to think of one whose behavior even approaches that of men like Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, and their ilk. Yet these men are held in high esteem, and criticizing them is considered unpatriotic, "the politics of personal destruction," or worse. Meanwhile, vicious hatred towards an airy blonde is acceptable behavior.

By the way, I am particularly curious about male Paris haters. Aren’t men supposed to defend and protect women, not laugh while they are abused and beaten? Furthermore, aren’t these values held in particular esteem by the so-called conservative men who are most likely to hate Paris?

So, spare me your jealousy over Paris’ money, and the vicious little idea that, because someone is rich, you may attack them at will. Spare me the absurdity that the rich girl shouldn’t complain while being jailed, because this makes her a "poor little rich girl." The rich have problems too – for instance, being attacked by those who hate them for being rich. If you set your hatred of Paris aside for a moment, it becomes clear that she has harmed no one, and the so-called crimes she was convicted of are absurd non-crimes. Then let us free Paris, and focus our attention on those who actually do evil.

Paris Hilton is released from jail

LOS ANGELES -
Paris Hilton was released from jail early Thursday due to an unspecified medical condition after serving only three days of a 23-day sentence.

She was sent home with an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet and must remain there for 40 days, according to sheriffs spokesman Steve Whitmore.

Hilton checked into the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood on Sunday night to begin serving time for violating probation.

The 26-year-old hotel heiress surrendered with little fanfare after a surprise appearance at the MTV Movie Awards, where she worked the red carpet in a strapless designer gown.

"I am trying to be strong right now," she told reporters at the time. "I'm ready to face my sentence. Even though this is a really hard time, I have my family, my friends and my fans to support me, and that's really helpful."

Hilton was housed in the "special needs" unit of the 13-year-old jail, separate from most of its 2,200 inmates. The unit contains 12 two-person cells reserved for police officers, public officials, celebrities and other high-profile inmates. She didn't have a cellmate.

After her first night in jail, Hilton's lawyer, Richard A. Hutton, said she was doing well under the circumstances.

"She's using this time to reflect on her life, to see what she can do to make the world better and hopefully, in my opinion, to change the attitudes that exist about her among many people," Hutton said after visiting Hilton.

When she was sentenced May 4, Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer ruled that she would not be allowed any work release, furloughs or use of an alternative jail or electronic monitoring in lieu of jail.

Sheriff's officials had said she would serve about 23 days of her 45 day sentence behind bars because of state rules allowing shorter sentences for good behavior.

The star of "The Simple Life" reality TV show pleaded no contest to a reckless-driving charge in January and was sentenced to 36 months' probation. When she was later pulled over by the California Highway Patrol, Hilton was told that she was driving on a suspended license and signed a document acknowledging she was not to drive. She was then pulled over by sheriff's deputies on Feb. 27 and charged with violating probation.

Screaming Paris Hilton sent back to jail

By LINDA DEUTSCH, AP Special Correspondent
9 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES -

Paris Hilton was taken from a courtroom screaming and crying Friday seconds after a judge ordered her returned to jail to serve out her entire 45-day sentence for a parole violation in a reckless driving case.

"It's not right!" shouted the weeping Hilton. "Mom!" she called out to her mother in the audience.

Hilton, who was brought to court in handcuffs in a sheriff's car, came into the courtroom disheveled and weeping. Her hair was askew and she wore a gray fuzzy sweatshirt over slacks. She wore no makeup and she cried throughout the hearing.

Her body also shook constantly as she dabbed at her eyes. Several times she turned to her parents who were seated behind her in the courtroom and mouthed the words, "I love you."

Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer was calm but apparently irked by developments of the morning. He said he had left the courthouse Thursday night having signed an order for Hilton to appear for the hearing.

When he got in his car early Friday, he said, he heard a radio report that she would not appear and that he had approved a telephonic hearing. He said no such thing had been approved by him.

"I at no time condoned the actions of the sheriff and at no time told him I approved the actions," he said of the decision to release Hilton from jail after three days.

"At no time did I approve the defendant being released from custody to her home on Kings Road," he said.

The hearing was requested by the city attorney's office, which had prosecuted Hilton and wanted Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca held in contempt for deciding to reassign Hilton to home detention despite the judge's express order that she must serve her time in jail.

A member of the county counsel's staff said that Baca was concerned with Hilton's medical condition and was willing to come to court with medical personnel to meet with the judge. The judge did not take him up on the offer, however the judge took no action on the contempt request.

Assistant City Attorney Dan F. Jeffries argued that Hilton should be returned to jail and said that was purely the judge's decision to make.

He said that "her release after only three days erodes confidence in the judicial system."

Hilton's attorney, Richard Hutton, implored the judge to order a hearing in his chambers at which he would hear testimony about Hilton's medical condition before making a decision.

The judge did not respond to that suggestion.

Another of her attorneys, Steve Levine, said, "The sheriff has determined that because of her medical situation, this (jail) is a dangerous place for her."

"The court's role here is to let the Sheriff's Department run the jail," he said.

A former district attorney, Robert Philibosian, also represented Hilton. He said that the law supports the sheriff in making an independent decision on her custodial situation.

The judge interrupted several times to say that he had received a call last Wednesday from an undersheriff informing him that Hilton had a medical condition and that he would submit papers to the judge to consider. He said the papers never arrived.

Every few minutes, the judge would interrupt proceedings and state the time on the clock and note that the papers still had not arrived.

He also noted that he had heard that a private psychiatrist visited Hilton in jail and he wondered if that person played a role in deciding her medical needs.

The last attorney to speak was another deputy city attorney, David Bozanich, who declared, "This is a simple case. There was a court. The Sheriff's Department chose to violate that order. There is no ambiguity."

As he made the final pitch for Hilton's further incarceration, Hilton's entire body began trembling. He had a ball of tissue clutched in her hand and tears ran down her face.

Seconds later the judge announced his decision.

"The defendant is remanded to county jail to serve the remainder of her 45-day sentence. This order is forthwith," he said.

Hilton screamed.

The courtroom was surrounded with eight deputies who immediately ordered all spectators out.

Hilton's mother Kathy threw her arms around her husband Rick and sobbed uncontrollably.

Deputies escorted Hilton out of the room, holding each of her arms as she looked back.

Paris Hilton released from jail

 -
Paris Hilton smiled and waved at photographers as she left jail

Her mother Kathy was waiting for her outside the detention facility

US heiress Paris Hilton has been released from jail in Los Angeles after serving 24 days for violating probation on a driving ban.

Hilton's parents Kathy and Rick arrived to pick her up shortly after 0800 BST.

Reporters were camped outside the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, California since Monday.

The 26-year-old, sentenced to 45 days on 3 June, was released early due to crowded jail conditions and time off for good behaviour.

She is scheduled to appear on Larry King's CNN talk show on Wednesday.

The network has said she will not be paid for her appearance, which has replaced a planned interview with filmmaker Michael Moore.

Hilton was briefly freed on medical grounds earlier this month but was sent back to jail by a court.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department had not revealed what time the reality TV star would be released.

Her West Hollywood neighbours, however, are reportedly bracing themselves for an influx of paparazzi and TV crews.

Hilton smiled and waved at the huge bank of photographers as she left the detention facility.

She was greeted with a hug from her mother Kathy and was driven away to an undisclosed location.
