(This is gonna baffle some of you, but I have no intention of explaining myself - and DONT jump to any seemingly obvious conclusions )
If you were a westerner wife of an Egyptian man and you loathed and detested cooking with all your heart and all your soul ... but for a number of reasons it was now becoming imperative that you prepare at least an evening meal 6 days a week that you can just do on a gas ring or in a microwave with a grand total of just 15 minutes preparation time per meal, what would your basic weekly menu for 2 adults be?

Hey Shanta sorry for ruining your thread but there's always noodles, as a break from real cooking or even a filler, quick, only take a couple minutes. (make sure you get the nice flavors though)

Come on where are all the keen cooks all of a sudden - surely they can come up with a few nourishing easy recipes that don't involve more than 15 minutes of slavitude! or chopping garlic - oh god I used to share a flat with a guy who would chop vegetables and we had just a cooker on the stair-well and the prep area was in the living room - oh how I grew to detest the sound of a knife chopping vegetables so much - even now 20 years later the thought of it makes me cringe.

If it's made in a microwave I doubt he would eat it so forget that part There would be nothing familiar to him that could be cooked in a micro that I can think of
On 2 gas rings you could make a few things, but really they would be a quick snack for a student dorm or a guy living on his own.
BUT!! they do involve chopping veggies. I can't think of anything that doesn't
Menu 1 Cold Tuna pasta
Boil penne pasta in hot water then rinse and drain and leave in the fridge to cool.10 mins Chop up one cucumber, 2 spring onions, a clove of garlic, open a can of sweetcorn and 2 cans of tuna. Throw the lot in a bowl with some black pepper, salt, squeeze of lime juice, tablespoon of tahina, tablespoon Dijon mustard, few sprigs of cilantro. Then add the cold pasta and serve. While the pasta is boiling you can prepare the rest and it should only take around 15 mins. I make this in Summer when it is too hot to eat hot food
Menu 2 Chicken Biryani ( not the way I make it but a quick way for anyone with only 15 mins).
Chop one small red onion, 2 cloves garlic and fry in a little oil. Add 3-4 diced chicken fillets till golden. Then add a teasp of masala ( ground cummin, coriander, cardamom, fenugreek, cinnamon, clove, turmeric, ( I make my own but you could buy a good curry powder) then fry to release the flavours. Add a teasp of tomato paste and fry this too. The add 500 gr basmati rice and stir it through. Then add 500 ml water and a pinch of salt and steam till all the water is absorbed. Fork through when ready and serve. It will only take about 20 mins tops.

I used to have a poster version of this one in my kitchen at home Its now got pride of place in my parent's cloakroom - for some reason it reminds them of me
The blurb says something like 'miss out and you'll be gutted'.
(And for those who mistakenly think she 'bats for the same side' here's one of her rather fit blokes she had a sprog with (in the program that is, not in real)
Wash a chicken. smear olive oil and some herbs, salt and pepper all over it. Toss garlic into the cavity.
In the dish with the chicken toss some new potatoes and carrots.
Bake at 350 degrees.
After you eat pull the chicken of the bone and save for next meal or sour cream enchiladas. Save the bones too.

Boil the bones from the baked chicken. Take out bones add a little of the chicken, carrots, celery, onion, garlic, parsley, salt and pepper.
Cook until carrots are done. Add noodles. Put into bowls sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Serve with bread or crackers.

I just made some chili in a Crock pot . . . it could just be a case of opening cans and dumping contents in the crock pot except for the cooking of meat, lol.

LOL - of_gold you can talk straight to me! I wanted what I said at the top - a weeks worth of some very simple basic recipes for some one who detests cooking - 15 mins prep time absolute max. One gas ring and a microwave.
Its NOT for me so MY preferences are nothing to do with it!
Person concerned is muslim so no ham on the agenda.
Anyways, thank you for your ideas I shall be passing them on in the fullness of time

Shanta, I have another great one, especially if you can get frozen veggies in Egypt. We have frozen veggies here and also this frozen fajita meat, chicken of beef.
Make stir fry.
Onion, chicken, soy sauce and veggies. Serve with rice.
Another easy recipe is "Chunky Beef Soup"(name bran) over rice.

Add to warm taco shells with lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. Serve with ranch style beans.
You can always make a pot of dried beans as well... very easy. Serve with corn bread.

Sorry Shanta I should have said a bag of Chicken Golden Wonder
Now here I was thinking a bag of crisps with cheese on top then radiated in the microwave would be quite tasty!! Of course, sneak some chicken in there and it would be a bit healthier

You have to put re-fried beans or bean dip on the corn chips first, then the meat and cheese and top with Jalapeno peppers. (or you can leave off the meat)
After out of microwave top with guacamole and sour cream.
A meal on a chip!

they sell jars of HOT chillies here
Shanta what about a Spanish Fritata.
Chuck some left over boiled tatties in a frying pan with some olive oil. Add sliced mushrooms, sliced tomatoes,a little sliced onion, and a smidgeonette of garlic. Then whizz up 6 eggs with black pepper, salt, chilli powder, and pour over it and cook in the frying pan till the bottom is cooked. Then sprinkle over some grated CHEESE Cheddar or Romy though and finish it off under a grill till golden and crispy. Posts: 3416 | Registered: Oct 2007

Have roasted peppers in a jar, dried tomatoes, olives, ready-fried onions and cured meats ready. Chop en mix with eggs, salt, parsley, oregano and a ground chilli pepper. Oil in a pan and let it cook slowly, cover with lid. Turn with a plate. Eat with crusty bread.
Make tomato vinaigrette with both chopped fresh and dried tomatoes, dried oregano, thyme, flat parsley, salt, pepper, oil and a bit of white vinegar or lemon juice.
Drink a white wine

Spaghetti and Meatballs
Many ways to make this but I make the quick version when I have no more than that 15 minutes you were talking about.
One burner: Cook spaghetti noodles (boil the water first )
Second burner: Make round balls of ground beef with a little salt/pepper and cook thoroughly.
After spaghetti noodles are done (about 5-7 minutes in boiling water, rinse and drain) Add 1 container of Prego or Ragu spaghetti sauce with green peppers/onions/mushrooms or which ever you like - there are many to choose from.
Cook and stir for about 3-5 minutes until well heated and mixed together.
Drain the meatballs and put over the spaghetti on a dish.
Add a salad or any green vegetable.
Quick, easy and can be for two meals easily....

May I suggest that you also add a little onion, garlic, parsley, egg, and bread crumbs in the meat before you roll them. Then roll them in the bread crumbs before frying.
