Not sure if he's into football, Micky, but www.ahlycorner.com has been a bit of a lifeline in our house! They show the live matches and also have a lot of other links to Egyptian films and stuff
Happy to hear he got there safely and is settling in!

British and European FOOTBALL is a MAN'S game Tina!!
American FOOTBALL.....the one that all the pansy, girly guys who wear all the shoulder pads, bollock protection, shin guards, suits of armour where they run with the ball under their arms for hours on end up and down, round and round
is NOT!!! I repeat not FOOTBALL!.
You stole that other European MAN'S game RUGBY and nancy'd it all up by wearing helmets and jousting attire.
Bunch of pansy's!!! Real men just wear a team shirt and shorts!!!
Soccer Origin of the Word Soccer (An Alternative)
The accepted origin of the word "soccer" is that its a contraction of the word "Association" with reference to "Association Football". The Football Association was formed in October 1863 when the rules were standardised by a meeting of eleven clubs. With one of the written rules now being that the carrying of the ball was not permitted this finally set in stone the biggest practical different between Association Football and Rugby Football.
In 1889 the word was "socca", later it was "socker" in 1891 and finally seemed to settle on "soccer" by 1895. The word is supposed to have evolved in University slang, created by shortening the word "Association" and adding "er". They had other expressions such as "brekkers" for "breakfast" and "rugger" for "rugby."
While this seems a relatively acceptable version of the origin, and it does seem reasonble if these references started appearing in literature a couple of decades after the "association" was formed, there are a couple of things which put doubts in my mind.
Firstly it doesn't exactly follow the established rules for these Oxford contractions. Instead of merely chopping the last syllable off the word and adding "er", they remove the last two syllables, also remove the first letter of the word, then change the soft "c"s in the word to hard "c"s, before adding the "er". Okay, so maybe following the normal rules does produce the less desirable "asser", but why didn't this word become at least "sosser"?
Secondly, there is an alternative theory which fits rather well and, like the game itself, is considerably older than a hundred and fifty years.
"fut ball" edict origin of soccerFootball has roots thousands of years ago across many countries of the world but in England it became taken up by the working classes and frowned upon by those in authority and the upper classes. It was a very rough and dangerous sport at first, known as "mob football" and was little more than a violent street battle. The first use of the phrase "football" or rather "fut ball" was in 1424 in the editc reproduced on the right, but what about "soccer"?
If you look up at the closest-sounding modern word, "sock", a couple of interesting points appear. The modern word comes from an old English word spelt "socc". More interestingly this was not a snug, fabric covering as it is today, but back then it meant a light shoe and it comes from the Latin "soccus". The word "socc" to mean "shoe" first appeared in 725AD but was there any evidence of it relating to football?
When Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in Carlisle Castle in Tudor times it is documented that she watched the game of football, indeed her retinue played for two hours "strongly" and "skillfully". And, by an amazing coincidence, on this map of Carlisle Castle, it is remarkable to note that certain fields are labelled "Castle Soceries".
So could this be proof that in medieval times the game was also known as "soccer" and played by those wearing "soccs" on ground known as "soceries"... with the players "socking" the ball? It is certainly very far from being proof and sadly this circumstantial evidence is all there is to this theory. There appears to be no written evidence putting the word "socc" in the context of football but it remains an interesting mystery. Origin of the Word Soccer (An Alternative)

there are stores open 24 hours...have one right on my corner...part of the suuc is also open all night and a bakery across the street never closes either...even in my hubby's village, there are at least 2-3 places open 24/7...of course it's not like a 7-11, but close enough for me!

Tina, weren't you supposedly married to a Mexican gentleman? They call soccer, football (futbol) as well. In fact I think we are pretty much the only country that calls it soccer. But I do find it hard to believe you didn't know that, didn't you say you lived in Mexico for a while?

Not another gaffe from Tina(Chimps)Kamal? She recently tried to convince me she was American, but lost my attention immediately, as she used the very British expression - "Piss me off". I pointed out to her that Americans say 'pissed' and she corrected it on ES. Looks like she slipped up again with Mexicans and football. Please try harder, Mrs Monkey. Atta girl.

Anyone who genuinely thinks you are American is easily fooled, with poor reading skills. There are a few here who cover for you, which simply makes them look stupid. I suspect a few also humour you, as you have too much 'on them'. Poor sods. Me, I just like to nudge you gently, from time to time... to help improve your acting skills. It makes no difference to me where you come from, 'Tina'... so carry on chimping.

Ok, well I live in the United States and Tina is quite right my dear friends. I use such improper ways to converse when I am with my friends. With the likes of Tina, she seems to not care what others may say or think. I do use MANY versions of variations of words. I use 'mate' as to call my best friend, and I do use 'hella cool' which is used on the coast lines of the continental United States and 'mad cool' for something that is nice. I don't think you can judge anyone person where he or she came from by the way they speak UNLESS u have met them in person. I think it is quite immature, but yet, I am yet not God (or any other religious figure that people may worship here) so I am not to judge yet nor hate. Besides, why would Tina lie and say she is from the US and she isn't?

The more obvious question is why would a supposed newbie defend someone they don't know... on their first few posts. Is it Mysticheart's day off?

Well, my so sincere apologies Lumos...were you too not a simple newbie? To be quite frank, I am just new here and I wanted help and Tina helped. I am not sticking up for on one. I believe she can hold her own. Now, I know I am 'the new kid on the block' and what not, but I am here just for my time off from my job. And who is Mysticheart? Is that suppose to make me feel intimidated? Or just a sad way to make a 'newbie' feel so insinuate?
