Suicide rates in the United States have soared to a 30-year high, with the most striking surge among middle-aged women and white people, according to federal data released Friday.
The total number of suicides rose from 29,199 in 1999 to 42,773 in 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.
Medical professionals said the numbers are alarming.
“The rate is ridiculously high. It’s a big issue,” said Dr. Charles Nemeroff, chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Miami.
“Of the top 10 causes of death — including cancer, strokes, heart disease — everything else went down but suicide went up,” he said. “It’s particularly striking among women, because they have traditionally had much lower suicide rates.”
For women between the ages of 45 and 64, the suicide rate jumped 63 percent in the 15-year period. It rose 43 percent for men in the same age group, according to the data.
Overall, middle-aged white people — a group that represents just 18 percent of America — accounted for a striking 33 percent of suicides.
Of the nearly 43,000 people who killed themselves in 2014, 14,000 were middle-aged whites. That’s twice the combined rate for blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Pacific Islanders, American Indians and Alaska Natives.
“The findings in this report are extremely concerning,” said Nadine Kaslow, an Emory University researcher and past president of the American Psychological Association.
The trend may be tied to unemployment, war and budget cuts for mental-health treatments.
Economic stress after 9/11 and during the 2007-09 recession may also have played a role in the high rates.
“Unemployment or the sudden loss of a job plays a huge role,” Nemeroff said. “And in that time period, you’ve got factors like terrorism and war.”
At the same time, there was less preventative treatment available to people suffering from mental-health problems than in previous decades.
“In the 1990s and 1980s, there were early intervention and education programs available — but there’s no funding for them now,” Nemeroff said. “It’s a combination of economic stress and decreased services.”
The overall suicide rate reached 13 people out of every 100,000 — the highest rate since 1986.
Poisoning was the top way women chose to kill themselves, while men most often used firearms.
The suicide rate decreased in only two demographic groups: black males and people over age 75.

The suicide rate for both younger and older Americans remains virtually unchanged, however, the rate has spiked for those in middle age (35 to 64 years old) with a 28 percent increase from 1999 to 2010. The rate for whites in middle-age jumped an alarming 40 percent during the same time frame. According to the CDC, there were more than 38,000 suicides in 2010 making it the tenth leading cause of death in America overall (third leading cause from age 15-24).
The US 2010 Final Data quantifies the US statistics for suicide by race, sex and age. Interestingly, African-American suicides have declined and are considerably lower than whites. Reasons are thought to include better coping skills when negative things occur as well as different cultural norms with respect to taking your own life. Also, Blacks (and Hispanics) tend to have stronger family support, community support and church support to carry them through these rough times.

U.S. suicide rates up, especially among women, but down for black males

(CNN)The number of suicides in the United States has been on the rise since 1999 in everyone between the ages of 10 and 74, according to a new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Researchers at the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics looked at data on cause of death for Americans 10 and older from 1999 to 2014. They also included information on age and race from death certificates. In 2014, 13 people out of every 100,000 took their own lives, compared with 10.5 per 100,000 in 1999. The suicide rate increased every year from 1999 to 2014 among both women and men and in every age group except those 75 and older. "The increase is broad-based," said Sally C. Curtin, a statistician at the National Center for Health Statistics and lead author of the new report, which was released Thursday. Such an increase in suicides could also make prevention efforts more difficult. "If it were just one particular group, you could say 'that is where we need to focus,' " Curtin said. The report is the first since 1999 to look at suicide rates among all age groups, she said. The number of suicides increased among all racial groups except for black males, who saw an 8% decline in suicide rate from 10.5 to 9.7 per 100,000 between 1999 and 2014, respectively. The largest increases were among American Indians and Alaska Natives; in this group, the suicide rate climbed by 89% among women and 38% among men. Suicide rates among white women and white men increased by 60% and 28%, respectively. Although it is difficult to know why suicide rates increased so much among American Indians and Alaska Natives, "they are typically in a lower socioeconomic status than some of the other ethnic and racial groups, and may have greater access to lethal means and be at higher risk of substance use and alcohol use," said Kristin Holland, a behavioral scientist in the CDC's Division of Violence Prevention who was not involved in the current research.
Mental health stigmas shift; care access seen as poor The suicide rate in 2014 marks a return to 1996, when the rate was also 13 per 100,000. Although the rate fell between 1996 and 1999, it has been steadily increasing since. The pace of increase has also picked up; whereas the suicide rate climbed by about 1% each year between 1999 and 2006, it increased by 2% each year between 2006 and 2014. "We are absolutely very concerned that ... suicide is still on the rise," said Dr. Christine Moutier, chief medical officer of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a nonprofit organization that funds suicide research. "Our nation has not made the level of investment on a federal level that can have the positive effect on suicide that has happened for the other leading causes of death," such as heart disease and cancer, said Moutier, who was not involved in the current report. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. The reasons for the increase in the suicide rate over the past 15 years are many and complex. Whereas there was a big push between the late 1980s and 1990s for health care providers to identify and treat depression and other mental health problems, some of this progress was undone in recent years because of concerns that antidepressants could increase suicide risk, Moutier said. These concerns were driven by controversy around the Food and Drug Administration's decision to give these medications a black box warning about the suicide risk in children, she added. The FDA cautioned at the time that children should still be treated for depression but monitored for any signs of suicidal thoughts.
All teens should be screened for depression, task force recommends Another contributor to the rise in suicide rates could be the growing number of overdose deaths from opiate painkillers, which are considered suicide if a medical examiner or coroner determines that they were probably intentional, Moutier said. "Access to lethal means is one of the most significant risk factors for an individual to die by suicide," she added. Yet another factor could have been the economic downturn in the late 2000s, Holland said. Largest increases in middle-aged and young women The report found that men died by suicide more often than women. In 2014, the rate was 20.7 suicides per 100,000 men, compared with 5.8 per 100,000 women. However, there was a 45% increase in the suicide rate in women between 1999 and 2014, whereas the increase among men during that period was 16%. The increase in suicide deaths was greater in magnitude for women of all ages compared with men, with the exception of people 75 and older, whose suicide rate fell from 4.5 per 100,000 in 1999 to 4 in 2014. Among women ages 10 to 14, the suicide rate increased threefold between 1999 and 2014, from 0.5 to 1.5 per 100,000. Although the rate was higher overall among men in this age group, it did not increase as much during this period, climbing from 1.9 to 2.6 per 100,000.
What it's like to moderate Reddit's Suicide Watch This increase among young women could be misleading because the rate itself is "exceedingly low," and only a small number of suicide deaths would be enough to drive it up substantially, Moutier said. "But we certainly have our eye on it," she added. Middle-aged women, between 45 and 64, had the highest suicide rate among women in both 1999 and 2014. This age group also had the largest increase in suicide rate: 63%, from 6 to 9.8 per 100,000. The 45-64 age group also had the largest increase in suicide rate among men: 43%, from 20.8 to 29.7 per 100,000. Men 75 and older had the highest overall suicide rate, even though it decreased from 42.4 to 38.8 per 100,000 between 1999 and 2014. The total number of suicide deaths was much greater in middle-aged men than this older group because the population of middle-aged men is so much larger, Curtin said. A shift in methods of suicide In both 1999 and 2014, firearms were the most common method by which men took their own lives, although the proportion of all suicides in men that were firearm-related decreased from 61.7% to 55.4%. Among women, poisoning was the most common method in 2014 and accounted for 34.1% of suicides, down from 36% in 1999. Despite the decreases in the proportion of suicides related to firearms and poisonings, these methods are still responsible for the largest number of suicide deaths, Curtin said. And at the same time these deaths have decreased, the rate of suffocation-related suicide, primarily hanging, has increased, from 16.3% to 26% among women and from 19.1% to 26.8% among men. "While it is good that rates for firearm- and poisoning-related suicides are decreasing a bit, it is concerning that the rates of suffocation are increasing," Holland said. Progress toward preventing suicide The fact that suicide rates are increasing among nearly all age groups means that prevention efforts have to be developed for many different settings, Moutier said. More research is needed to determine which factors are putting middle-aged men and women at greatest risk and which of those factors can be targeted and by which groups, she added. The CDC is focusing its suicide prevention efforts on finding strategies that can help prevent suicide among middle-aged men because the number of suicide deaths in that group is so high. "They are a hard group to reach. They do not see health care providers as much as other age groups," Holland said. She and her colleagues are testing strategies that combine improving mental health care and increasing screening for mental health problems with programs that promote social connectedness. Moutier said she hopes efforts by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention could be helping to lower suicide rates among people 75 and older. These efforts include educating primary-care doctors, especially those specializing in the elderly, about identifying people at risk of suicide and working to enhance their connections in society and participation in activities.

Suicides Among Black Children Rise as Rates for Whites Drop: Study By Liz Fields
May 19, 2015 | 3:15 pm Black children under the age of 12 are committing suicide at nearly twice the rate they did roughly two decades ago, while white children of the same age are committing suicide less, according to groundbreaking research focused on rates of suicide among children aged 5-11 in the United States.
The study, published Monday in the journal JAMA Pediatrics, highlights a surprising trend and "potential racial disparity that warrants attention," researchers said of the the findings.
While overall suicide rates remained steady among 5-11 year-olds during the 19-year-study, conducted from 1993 to 2012, suicide rates among black children in this age group jumped from 1.36 to 2.54 per one million children, while white suicide rates in the group dropped from 1.14 to 0.77 per 1 million children, according to the study.
The researchers noted that for children aged between 5-11, suicide is the 11th leading cause of death. But little is still known about the source and cause of these statistics, mainly because past studies have focused on children who commit suicide just before or after they hit adolescence, the researchers said.
"Suicide is very rare in children under the age for 10, and in the US there are fewer than 10 of these deaths each year," the study's lead researcher Jeff Bridge, of the Research Institute at the Nationwide Children's Hospital Institutional in Ohio, told VICE News. "Most of the research has focused on those 10 years or older."

Bridge said he initially began the study after a journalist contacted him roughly two years ago following the suicide death of a young child.
"The reporter asked what the frequency was of suicide among very young children, and I wanted to give an exact number and I went to the data and couldn't find a source," he said. "We wanted to do a study to fill that gap in our knowledge."
Bridge said the higher suicide rate over time for black children highlighted in the report were surprising given that, "Historically white individuals in the US have had higher suicide rates across all ages."
The increase in suicide rates among young black children also appears to be at odds with overall trends among African American suicides across the country. Between 1993 and 2002, the rate of suicide among black people of all ages showed a small but steady drop, according to statistics compiled by the American Association of Suicidology (AAS).
In those years, death by firearm was the most common method of suicide among African Americans, accounting for more than 48 percent of all suicides, while suffocations at roughly 27 percent was the second most prevalent method, the AAS figures showed.

In Bridge's study, suicide by hanging or suffocation had increased significantly in young African American boys, almost tripling over the course of the study period, while numbers remained basically the same for white boys of the same age.
While Bridge said the study was not designed to look at the reasons why such young children are committing suicide, he hopes that future research "will shed light on that question."
The researchers are now undertaking a follow-up study on the causes of suicide among young children compared with early adolescents, he said.

Does drop in antidepressant use correlate with spike in suicides?
By Steven Ross Johnson | April 22, 2016 The spike in the nation's suicide rate over the past decade has some experts wondering if concerns about antidepressants over the same period might have inadvertently affected treatment of depression.
Overall, the suicide rate in the U.S. rose 24% between 1999 and 2014 for people ages 10 to 74, according to the latest findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Middle-aged white people account for a third of all suicides.
But perhaps most startling is that the rate of suicide in girls between ages 10 and 14 has tripled, although these suicides totaled 150 in 2014.
The overall increase is a stark reversal of the declines seen during the 1980s. Some blame the way the primary-care system approaches depression, which, if left untreated contributes to a vast majority of suicide attempts.
Several studies have shown a decline in diagnoses for depression in the years following the Food and Drug Administration's controversial decision in 2004 to include on the label of antidepressant medications a black box warning regarding an associated risk for suicidal thoughts among young people.
Two years after the warning was issued, antidepressant use declined by 31% among adolescents, fell by nearly a quarter among young adults and by 14% in adult patients, according to 2014 study published in the BMJ. The study also noted an increase during the same time in suicide attempts among adolescents and young adults.
Dr. Christine Moutier, chief medical officer of not-for-profit advocacy organization American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, said that the FDA's decision was overhyped by the media at the time, and that the actual data showed no inherent risk of suicide with the use of antidepressants. That influenced a significant number of primary-care physicians to forgo treating depression and instead refer patients to behavioral-health specialists.
“I think primary-care doctors became frightened, and the public became particularly confused,” Moutier said. “I think we are still living with a myth that antidepressants cause suicide.”
Earlier this year, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force reversed an earlier recommendation and said screening was universally helpful to all U.S. adults over age 18, including pregnant and postpartum women.
In 2009, the panel recommended screenings should be done only by providers who had mental health staff at hand or could easily provide referrals. The task force had also previously believed there was not enough evidence to extend the guidance to pregnant and postpartum women.
This year, the panel said the benefits of treatment, even medication that may affect fetuses, far outweigh any potential risks.
The CDC's newest data found the fastest percentage increase occurred among women, where the rate was 45% higher in 2014 than in 1999.
But the total number of suicides during the study period paints a different picture.
White men between ages 45 to 64 were a third of suicide deaths in 2014, up from about a quarter in 1999. Women between ages 45 and 64 experienced a 63% spike from 1999 to 2014.
There were nearly 43,000 U.S. suicides in 2014. More than 14,000 of them were middle-aged whites — twice the combined total for all blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Pacific Islanders, American Indians and Alaska Natives.
Experts say there must be complex and multiple factors to explain such as widespread increase among almost all racial and age groups.
According to Dr. William Schmitz Jr., past-president of the American Association of Suicidology, the latest findings are frustrating given the many advances that have been made in suicide prevention in recent years.
“Most people don't realize there are treatments that are specific to suicidology that's showing really good results,” Schmitz said.
Suicide is the nation's 10th leading cause of death, and the overall rate rose 24% in 15 years.
The report doesn't try to answer why certain trends are occurring.
But experts speculate that middle age can be a particularly hard time for whites, who—compared with some other racial and ethnic groups—commonly don't have as many supportive relationships with friends, family, or religious communities.
Money was a factor, too, they say. The economy was in recession from the end of 2007 until mid-2009. Even well afterward, polls showed most Americans remained worried about weak hiring, a depressed housing market and other problems.
In a report this week, the CDC found that life expectancy for white women—and for white people as a whole—declined slightly in 2014.
A combination of factors are to blame, including more drug overdoses and suicides.

Drug Overdoses May Play Role in Slight Drop in Life Expectancy for White Americans /BY JOIN TOGETHER STAFF April 20th, 2016/
A new government report finds there was a slight decline in the life expectancy of white Americans in 2014. Drug overdoses, liver disease and suicide were the main factors in the decrease, according to the lead researcher from the National Center for Health Statistics.
The report found life expectancy for whites decreased to 78.8 years in 2014, from 78.9 the previous year, according to The New York Times. Women’s life expectancy declined from 81.2 in 2013 to 81.1 in 2014. Men’s life expectancy stayed the same, at 76.5 years.
The death rate increase was most pronounced among whites in their mid-20s to their mid-50s, the report found. “The increase in death in this segment of the population was great enough to affect life expectancy at birth for the whole group,” said lead researcher Elizabeth Arias, a statistician at the National Center for Health. “That is very unusual.”
The overall life expectancy for Americans remained at 78.8 years. Among blacks, life expectancy rose to 75.6 in 2014, from 75.5 the previous year. Hispanic life expectancy increased from 81.6 in 2013 to 81.8 in 2014.
A study published in November 2015 found the death rate of white middle-aged Americans is on the rise, driven in large part because of drug and alcohol overdoses, suicide, chronic liver disease and cirrhosis of the liver.
The Princeton University researchers said no other industrialized country has seen a similar deterioration in health during the 15 years studied, from 1999 to 2013. The researchers connected rising death rates in middle-aged whites to factors including increasing reports of pain, growing psychological distress, more alcohol poisonings and greater availability of prescription painkillers such as OxyContin and Vicodin.
The study found death rates of U.S. Hispanics and blacks decreased during the same period.

The suicide of a young person is always a tragedy, an event deeply mourned by the youth’s family and community. Sadly, the prevalence of this kind of tragedy is greater than many might think. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for 2005 through 2013 indicate suicide has been the third or fourth leading cause of death for people ages 10 to 14, and the second or third leading cause of death for young people ages 15 to 24. Within these age groups, suicide rates can be further differentiated by race. Although suicide incidence has tended to be lower for Black youth than for other demographic groups, today suicides of African American children and young adults are on the rise. In order to understand how to reverse this worrisome new trend, a complex set of factors need to be examined. Suicide by Race, Age, and Gender In the total U.S. population not taking age into account, whites have the highest rate of suicide followed by American Indians and Alaskan Natives, and Asians and Pacific Islanders. Blacks and Hispanics have the lowest rates of suicide. For young people, the highest rates of suicide-related deaths occur among American Indians and Alaskan Natives. Rates of suicide for Black youth and the overall Black population tend to be lower than these other demographics – but things have changed recently. New evidence about generational shifts in Black suicide patterns has attracted attention from researchers, media, and community leaders. A 2015 study conducted by Dr. Jeffrey Bridge and colleagues used data from the Centers for Disease Control to examine gender and race variations in youth suicide, and found an increase in suicide rates for Black children from 1.36 death per million population to 2.54 per million. The study also found higher suicide rates for Black and white boys compared to girls in both racial groups. Suicide rates declined for white children overall. How can the findings about increased suicide rates for Blacks be explained? Dr. Bridge and his co-authors offered ideas, including the hypothesis that Black children, particularly boys, may have greater exposure to poverty, aggression and violence, and be less likely to get treatment for depression. Factors that Contribute to Suicide Years of research have identified factors that indicate a higher potential for individuals to die from suicide. The predictors include poor mental and emotional health, stress at home, stress from peers, and difficulties at school or on the job. Additional factors include either social isolation or excessive social integration, as in the pressures individuals can feel in regimented environments like the military. People are also known to be more prone to suicide if their social supports or coping mechanisms become weaker. Notably, African Americans are disproportionately likely to experience all of these stresses or deficits. Black youth, for example, suffer high rates of unemployment and underemployment, often experience poverty and low socioeconomic status, and frequently find themselves involved in violent situations. The surprise is that, despite all of these adverse conditions, Black youth – even if their suicide rates are increasing – still have lower overall rates of suicide than other social groups subject to similar adverse factors. However, the apparently low rates may not be what they seem.
Blacks often experience injustices and discrimination that can lead to poor mental health, but culture may play a role in deemphasizing behaviors that signal potential for suicide. Black youth are often taught to hide emotions by families, schools, and peers – told to “toughen up” or “pray about it.” Moreover, many Black Americans do not know about or have positive relationships with mental health resources, or may be reluctant to call upon such resources. Secrecy and distrust may cut people off from medical and mental health care and perpetuate the notion that “time heals all wounds.” The result may be suicides – and also behavior that leads to deaths or harms not recognized as suicidal. Possibly, too, Black suicide rates seem relatively low because suicide is not straightforward to define. Some deaths that are not called suicides may amount to the same thing. One possibility is “suicide by cop,” in which individuals deliberately behave in threatening ways toward police, in attempts to provoke a lethal response. “Suicide by interpersonal violence” also happens, when individuals provoke family members, friends, or strangers to make lethal responses to them. Rather than simply categorizing violence among Black youth as “street violence,” or even bullying, analysts should consider ways in which certain Black youth seem to intentionally invoke violent encounters in the expectation of being harmed or even killed. Some of these situations may amount to suicide, which would imply that low statistical rates of suicide for African Americans are not what they seem. Possibly, the kinds of factors that make people unusually vulnerable to suicide are leading to Black deaths that amount to suicides, even if they are not officially classified as such. Outreach and Prevention The assumption that Blacks are less prone to suicide than other groups must be questioned – especially as this view pertains to Black youth. Lower official rates of suicide do not mean individuals and groups are immune from suicidal ideation and behaviors. Among African American youngsters, lower rates may only mean that some deaths are being misclassified. And even if rates are relatively low, the rise in Black youth suicides shows that interventions are needed. Fortunately, data on recent trends in suicide and self-harm have sparked new efforts at outreach and prevention, including efforts particularly aimed at minority youth. Support groups encourage individuals, families, peers, and the general public to become more aware of potentially suicidal feelings and behaviors. And new forms of treatment combine counseling with heightened social support from family members and peers. To further strengthen preventative efforts, we must do additional research on the factors that contribute to suicide attempts and deaths – with careful attention to previously understudied populations and new sensitivity to social and cultural stressors that vary for different racial, economic, and age groups.

Thereafter the Group met several times at various African venues: Lomé, 1992; Harare, 1993; Windhoek and Addis Ababa, 1994. At its meetings in Windhoek (March 1994) and in Addis Ababa (May 1994), the experts were able to adopt the first complete draft text of an African NWFZ Treaty. The final Treaty text was completed at a joint meeting of experts in Johannesburg and Pelindaba in May and June 1995, and was approved by African Heads of State on 23 June 1995. The 1995 regular session of the UNGA approved the Treaty on 6 November (A/C.1/50/L.23).
The ANWFZ Treaty — the Treaty of Pelindaba — was signed in Cairo on 11 April 1996 by 47 of the continent's 53 States. The protocols were signed at the same time by the nuclear-weapon States (NWS) except for Russia, which sought clarification on the status of the Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia (controlled by the United Kingdom and formerly used as a base for nuclear weapons by the United States). The UN Security Council issued a statement on 12 April commending the ANWFZ.

The term "Conspiracy Theory" was basically, intentionally created in the 1960s in order to discredit information which was critical of the ruling hierarchy at the time.

b. To employ propaganda assets to and refute the attacks of the critics. Book reviews and feature articles are particularly appropriate for this purpose. The unclassified attachments to this guidance should provide useful background material for passing to assets. Our ploy should point out, as applicable, that the critics are (I) wedded to theories adopted before the evidence was in, (II) politically interested, (III) financially interested, (IV) hasty and inaccurate in their research, or (V) infatuated with their own theories.

But Aren’t Conspiracy Theories – In Fact – Nuts?
Forget Western history and CIA dispatches … aren’t conspiracy theorists nutty?
In fact, conspiracies are so common that judges are trained to look at conspiracy allegations as just another legal claim to be disproven or proven based on the specific evidence:
Federal and all 50 state’s codes include specific statutes addressing conspiracy, and providing the punishment for people who commit conspiracies.
But let’s examine what the people trained to weigh evidence and reach conclusions think about “conspiracies”. Let’s look at what American judges think.
Searching Westlaw, one of the 2 primary legal research networks which attorneys and judges use to research the law, I searched for court decisions including the word “Conspiracy”. This is such a common term in lawsuits that it overwhelmed Westlaw. Specifically, I got the following message:
“Your query has been intercepted because it may retrieve a large number of documents.”
From experience, I know that this means that there were potentially millions or many hundreds of thousands of cases which use the term. There were so many cases, that Westlaw could not even start processing the request.
So I searched again, using the phrase “Guilty of Conspiracy”. I hoped that this would not only narrow my search sufficiently that Westlaw could handle it, but would give me cases where the judge actually found the defendant guilty of a conspiracy. This pulled up exactly 10,000 cases — which is the maximum number of results which Westlaw can give at one time. In other words, there were more than 10,000 cases using the phrase “Guilty of Conspiracy” (maybe there’s a way to change my settings to get more than 10,000 results, but I haven’t found it yet).
Moreover, as any attorney can confirm, usually only appeal court decisions are published in the Westlaw database. In other words, trial court decisions are rarely published; the only decisions normally published are those of the courts which hear appeals of the trial. Because only a very small fraction of the cases which go to trial are appealed, this logically means that the number of guilty verdicts in conspiracy cases at trial must be much, much larger than 10,000.
Moreover, “Guilty of Conspiracy” is only one of many possible search phrases to use to find cases where the defendant was found guilty of a lawsuit for conspiracy. Searching on Google, I got 3,170,000 results (as of yesterday) under the term “Guilty of Conspiracy”, 669,000 results for the search term “Convictions for Conspiracy”, and 743,000 results for “Convicted for Conspiracy”.
Of course, many types of conspiracies are called other things altogether. For example, a long-accepted legal doctrine makes it illegal for two or more companies to conspire to fix prices, which is called “Price Fixing” (1,180,000 results).
Given the above, I would extrapolate that there have been hundreds of thousands of convictions for criminal or civil conspiracy in the United States.
Finally, many crimes go unreported or unsolved, and the perpetrators are never caught. Therefore, the actual number of conspiracies committed in the U.S. must be even higher.
In other words, conspiracies are committed all the time in the U.S., and many of the conspirators are caught and found guilty by American courts. Remember, Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme was a conspiracy theory.
Indeed, conspiracy is a very well-recognized crime in American law, taught to every first-year law school student as part of their basic curriculum. Telling a judge that someone has a “conspiracy theory” would be like telling him that someone is claiming that he trespassed on their property, or committed assault, or stole his car. It is a fundamental legal concept.
Obviously, many conspiracy allegations are false (if you see a judge at a dinner party, ask him to tell you some of the crazy conspiracy allegations which were made in his court). Obviously, people will either win or lose in court depending on whether or not they can prove their claim with the available evidence. But not all allegations of trespass, assault, or theft are true, either.
Proving a claim of conspiracy is no different from proving any other legal claim, and the mere label “conspiracy” is taken no less seriously by judges.
It’s not only Madoff. The heads of Enron were found guilty of conspiracy, as was the head of Adelphia. Numerous lower-level government officials have been found guilty of conspiracy. See this, this, this, this and this.
Time Magazine’s financial columnist Justin Fox writes:

Most good investigative reporters are conspiracy theorists, by the way.
And what about the NSA and the tech companies that have cooperated with them?
But Our Leaders Wouldn’t Do That
While people might admit that corporate executives and low-level government officials might have engaged in conspiracies – they may be strongly opposed to considering that the wealthiest or most powerful might possibly have done so.
But powerful insiders have long admitted to conspiracies. For example, Obama’s Administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, Cass Sunstein, wrote:
Of course some conspiracy theories, under our definition, have turned out to be true. The Watergate hotel room used by Democratic National Committee was, in fact, bugged by Republican officials, operating at the behest of the White House. But Someone Would Have Spilled the Beans
A common defense to people trying sidetrack investigations into potential conspiracies is to say that “someone would have spilled the beans” if there were really a conspiracy.
But famed whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg explains:
It is a commonplace that “you can’t keep secrets in Washington” or “in a democracy, no matter how sensitive the secret, you’re likely to read it the next day in the New York Times.” These truisms are flatly false. They are in fact cover stories, ways of flattering and misleading journalists and their readers, part of the process of keeping secrets well. Of course eventually many secrets do get out that wouldn’t in a fully totalitarian society. But the fact is that the overwhelming majority of secrets do not leak to the American public. This is true even when the information withheld is well known to an enemy and when it is clearly essential to the functioning of the congressional war power and to any democratic control of foreign policy. The reality unknown to the public and to most members of Congress and the press is that secrets that would be of the greatest import to many of them can be kept from them reliably for decades by the executive branch, even though they are known to thousands of insiders.
History proves Ellsberg right. For example:
One hundred and thirty thousand (130,000) people from the U.S., UK and Canada worked on the Manhattan Project. But it was kept secret for years A BBC documentary shows that: There was “a planned coup in the USA in 1933 by a group of right-wing American businessmen . . . . The coup was aimed at toppling President Franklin D Roosevelt with the help of half-a-million war veterans. The plotters, who were alleged to involve some of the most famous families in America, (owners of Heinz, Birds Eye, Goodtea, Maxwell Hse & George Bush’s Grandfather, Prescott) believed that their country should adopt the policies of Hitler and Mussolini to beat the great depression”
Moreover, “the tycoons told General Butler the American people would accept the new government because they controlled all the newspapers.” Have you ever heard of this conspiracy before? It was certainly a very large one. And if the conspirators controlled the newspapers then, how much worse is it today with media consolidation?

Indeed, the the New York Times delayed the story so that it would not affect the outcome of the 2004 presidential election The decision to launch the Iraq war was made before 9/11. Indeed, former CIA director George Tenet said that the White House wanted to invade Iraq long before 9/11, and inserted “crap” in its justifications for invading Iraq. Former Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill – who sat on the National Security Council – also says that Bush planned the Iraq war before 9/11. And top British officials say that the U.S. discussed Iraq regime change one month after Bush took office. Dick Cheney apparently even made Iraqi’s oil fields a national security priority before 9/11. And it has now been shown that a handful of people were responsible for willfully ignoring the evidence that Iraq lacked weapons of mass destruction. These facts have only been publicly disclosed recently. Indeed, Tom Brokaw said, “All wars are based on propaganda.” A concerted effort to produce propaganda is a conspiracy Moreover, high-level government officials and insiders have admitted to dramatic conspiracies after the fact, including:
Supporting terrorists to promote geopolitical goals Supporting false flag terror The admissions did not occur until many decades after the events.
These examples show that it is possible to keep conspiracies secret for a long time, without anyone “spilling the beans”.
In addition, to anyone who knows how covert military operations work, it is obvious that segmentation on a “need-to-know basis”, along with deference to command hierarchy, means that a couple of top dogs can call the shots and most people helping won’t even know the big picture at the time they are participating.
Moreover, those who think that co-conspirators will brag about their deeds forget that people in the military or intelligence or who have huge sums of money on the line can be very disciplined. They are not likely to go to the bar and spill the beans like a down-on-their-luck, second-rate alcoholic robber might do.
Finally, people who carry out covert operations may do so for ideological reasons — believing that the “ends justify the means”. Never underestimate the conviction of an ideologue.
Conclusion
The bottom line is that some conspiracy claims are nutty and some are true. Each has to be judged on its own facts.
Humans have a tendency to try to explain random events through seeing patterns … that’s how our brains our wired. Therefore, we have to test our theories of connection and causality against the cold, hard facts.
On the other hand, the old saying by Lord Acton is true:
I cannot accept your canon that we are to judge Pope and King unlike other men, with a favourable presumption that they did no wrong. If there is any presumption it is the other way, against the holders of power, increasing as the power increases. Historic responsibility has to make up for the want of legal responsibility. Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority, still more when you superadd the tendency or the certainty of corruption by authority. There is no worse heresy than that the office sanctifies the holder of it.
Those who operate without checks and balances – and without the disinfectant sunlight of public scrutiny and accountability – tend to act in their own best interests … and the little guy gets hurt.
The early Greeks knew it, as did those who forced the king to sign the Magna Carta, the Founding Fathers and the father of modern economics. We should remember this important tradition of Western civilization.

Great info on conspiracy theory MOM, I had a feeling that was accurate. I always felt like it was a red flag that they had this token term to go to when someone would start talking about stuff like that.
Conspiracy theory is another one of their buzzwords. They condition people to feel a certain way when you use a certain term or phrase.

Truth and lies have nothing to do with a persons origins. They just have more to gain from lying. Sometimes all it takes is a bit of conscience to break away from the system. And sometimes its a bait and switch.
Unfortunately a lot of times they will tell the truth as a bait and switch tactic, and place a spin on it to come up with a bogus conclusion that they switch it to.
