Can anyone suggest a nice hotel in al minya?
I will be there in a few months and I am a single American female traveling alone. I am looking for a 4 star property. Someone suggested a hotel called the Armed forces in minya, but I have searched online and can find absolutely nothing about it. Also, would it be better to stay in Cairo and then travel to minya, or is minya ok for the whole time?

Thanks
Emily

In El Menia you can stay at Mercure Hotel(Sofitel) Tel. (086) 341515 , which is quite OK. The furniture is old, but you have trained staff and room service, etc..
The Armed Forces Hotel is located inside the AF complex, at the opposite side of the Nile next to the only bridge of El Menia, it's less expensive but don't expect a lot more than a clean place, the view is nice and they have a beutiful garden Tel. (086) 366274 but the operator may not understand English, try one the managing officers.
Have a pleasent stay there.

Can I ask why you are going to El Minya? Do you have business there? If so, let your business pick the hotel, if they will.

If it is for holiday, know that as an American you won't be VERY free to come and go in El Minya at will. You will have a police escort with you at all times. This may limit the activities you will be allowed to do. I don't know if you had considered that already or not, but it should be a consideration if you are planning to spend a lot of time there.

If it were me, I'd stay in Cairo and take side trips there on the train.

I am a Brit I have stayed there. As Debbie says you are escorted everywhere. We travelled from Luxor and the police took us to the hotel and arranged to pick us up the next morning. I stayed at the Akhenaton, it was fine.

Like Debbie says what are you going there for. Is it to visit Tel el Amarna and Beni Hassan? That is what I did and they are fabulous but I only needed to stay there the one night to do that. So you can base yourself in Cairo or Luxor and visit there.

Minya's about 3 hours from Cairo by train. There's a beautiful hotel right on the river bank. I can't remember what it's called. I went there on a business trip and we held a seminar and lunch in the restaurant there. I don't know what the rooms are like but they are small chalets in a lovely setting. I'll try and post the name tomorrow.

I am curious Debbie and Akshar, why you would need a police escort in Minya, if you are American or in my case Canadian.I have a friend that attends University there and he never mentioned this to me. Thanks for your replies.Salaam.Sincerely Julia

You don't need a police escort you get given one. All along the roads there are checkpoints and if you are a foreigner in a car then you can not travel as and when you will. You have to go in police convoys. These leave the major towns at set times and are used by everyone.

Inside a town then there is no problem.

It is all because they are paranoid about a foreigner being hurt in Egypt and the damage to the economy.

Ads soemone married to an Egyptian I did find recently that production of my marriage papers saved me from this hassle. So that's one solution lol

I beg an exception to this statement. Inside Minya or Assuit, if you are staying at a hotel, you will also have police guards planted in reception at your hotel. You will be followed if/when you leave the hotel. It can be very annoying.
If your friend is Canadian and it isn't happening to her, I would guess they aren't as concerned about Canadians. You are lucky.

Well of course, if he is a male Egyptian he wouldn't mention to you the problems of being a foreigner in Minya. Why would he? He probably is oblivious to the fact that it even happens. LOL

They didn't do that to me when I stayed there. Maybe it is being British and not American, who knows. There never seesm to be any consistancy lol. Mahmoud and I weren't married then so it isn't to do with that.

I loved walking along the Corniche there in the early evening and enjoying the sunset without loads of touts pestering me.

I remember thinking that this could have been really nice if I hadn't been so bothered to out-fox or out-run the police.
