There are countless good places, and two ladies won't get hassled anywhere.
Maybe you should specify your request a bit ... what kind of food would you prefer? Do you want to sit outside or inside? What does upper average sort of price mean to you? A meal considered very expensive by Egyptian standars, let's say in a five star restaurant would still be regarded as very reasonable compared to European standards ...

if you want a place to dine out (ONLY once) then I recommend thr ROusha and Kandahar, after paying the bill you wouldnt probably would never dine out again in your life
and Dalia got it right, you wont be hassaled at all, unless you are very very pretty, guys might try to pick you up

I agree with dalia u need to specify the kind of food u want to eat , the view you want, open or closed place, drinks are available or no, how much money each of u is willing to spend, the time and the day you will do it .. not sure where you're from, but in some parts of the world people would tend to stay away from restaurants that are in the hotel as they tend to be over priced and the quality of food isn't as good.
not the case in cairo (as a general rule, though of course everyone's tastes differ and some will swear this or that restaurant is much, much better).
again, as a general rule, many locals frequent the restaurants in 5-star hotels, so if you go to any of them, you will not find yourself in a room-full of tourists.
Try the Marriott Zamalek or the Semiramis' restaurants for international cuisine (thai, italian, etc.)
Try Abu Seid in Zamalek for Egyptian cuisine in a fabulous atmosphere (decor is probably what you're imagining egypt to be like.) The place is full of egyptians and expats, and a taxi from your hotel will have no problem finding it. It's off the 26th of July which is the main street in Zamalek. Get off on the corner by the Diwan Bookstore, and then just head down a few feet on the little side street perpendicular to 26th of July. From the 26th, you'll see a big wooden oversided door on the first building to your right -- that's Abu Seid. There's no sign If it's full or not to your liking, go back to 26th of July, turn right (toward downtown and Nile). Just a few feet down is another restaurant called La Bodega (international cuisine). it's located upstairs on 2nd floor. Entrance looks like a residential building and again there's no sign. But the street is very very crowded all night so just ask "La Bodega?" and somebody will point you to the right direction. It's very cosmopolitan and you will feel like you are anywhere in the world. Maybe not what you want, or maybe you'd like to mingle with the local crowd over a drink and people watch how a certain class of egyptians live and play. It's always nice to see all sides of the society and might be a nice contrast to the vendors who you meet on the touristic sites during the day. Staff in both places, as many of the patrons, will speak english and usually french or another european language.

Yup, I would definitely recommend Abu el Seid as well. I do prefer the one in Maadi, though because they have an outside dining area which is really really nice, oriental decor, cozy lighting and all that.
Tabboula in Garden City is a bit similar to Abu el Seid - oriental decor in earthy tones - but features Lebanese food. Very good!
Welsafti, Raoucha & Kandahar is expensive according to Egyptian standards, but the price you pay there for a meal including drinks is not more than you pay for a meal in a low- to medium-priced restaurant in Europe. If I go for a pizza and a few beers in a simple Italian restaurant in my hometown it will cost me about 20 euros at least, that's 150 LE ...
Guess I hadn't really thought that much into it. I don't like food that is very spicy - I know, I'm picky. But I guess it would be nice to really experience Egypt - that's not meant to sound patronising! When we have the cruise its all inclusive so it'd be nice to get to try something 'different'. A nice meal here would cost about £40 each, I guess thats about 60 euros if that helps. Also how 'dressy' would we need to be? Do we have to keep shoulders and legs covered then too? Thanks

30-40 euros for both and you can dine comfortably in any 5-star hotel restaurant. usually you can dine for about 10 euros each in a nice place actually.
if you're picky about your food, try one of the boats in zamalek. they're permanently moored, and you have 3 huge boats along the nile, each with about 3-5 restaurants. you're bound to see them across the nile from downtown's corniche.
depends which restaurants...all the ones i listed and any in a hotel, dress same as if going out at home. however, that's only if you're hopping from hotel to taxi to restaurant and back into taxi to hotel. if you plan to walk or go anywhere in public (like stroll down a street), then no don't wear a short skirt and no don't wear tight revealing clothing or you may receive both unwanted attention and feel uncomfortable.

For seafood and freshwater fish, try The Fish Market barge. It's on the Nile, next door TGIF's and not too far from the El Gazira(sp?) Sheraton. The fish, shrimp,lobsters, shellfish, etc., is laid out on a huge bed of ice and much of it is so fresh, it is alive. They also bake Egyptian bread on the premises. And the view across the Nile into busy Cairo, is beautiful. I'll be eating there again, in about a week-and-a-half.

I have yet to hear anyone say anything good about the food there though. It's tremendously over priced and not very good. I recommend going up there in the middle of the day (before they open) and take your camera. It is a free ride up and the photos you will get are better than the ones at the Cairo tower.

Thank you for all your help. Cairo was very different (manic) to what I expected and to be totally truthful we didn't dare venture out alone!! However, we did have an indian meal at Mena House, Oberoi which was very nice. Very similar to home, although a much nicer setting. What a fabulous country!!!! I LOVE EGYPT and am coming back again next year.
