I am a fan of the rai scene. Rai has been around for a while and it has the influence of reggae, trance, modern beat against tradional music background. It began with Algerians? in France.

Almost forgot that flamenco arabe has many followers with the Morrocan influence and Southern Andalucia (Spain) influence. Shakira often puts her Lebanese background and mixes with modern elements in her music.

Oh! A friend of mine at work gave me a CD by Souad Massi, called Deb. It's definitely flamenco-influenced. Heard of her? What country is she from? I love this CD, some of the lyrics are French...

Aj-07? What kind of music are you looking for? Any particular type of singer, period, genre?
Anyway, I do have a recommendation. I am learning belly dancing and have found a wonderful arabic CD featuring upbeat belly dancing songs including such major arab artists as the above-mentioned Amr Diab. It is called "BellyDance Fever" and includes a variety of middle eastern rythms, instruments, and voices (along with some acquired western influences).

Souad Massi is from Algeria but she now lives in Paris.
