Has anyone been here? what is it like, is it worth a visit to the cave church there? Is it safe to go there on our own?

It's very interesting. Take a driver with you that knows the area. If you want the name of one, here is one (Raafat Khella 010-105-7081). He is a Coptic man that should know the area well enough.
Also, while you are there go on up to the NGO Association for the Protection of the Environment (A.P.E.) See www.ape.org.eg It's a worthwhile project to visit and to pick up some souvenirs. www.casualcairodetours.pyramids.net
