Cairo must be seen from outside if you want to fully enjoy the magic of this city. T First try this. take a walk, mingle with its people then I'm sure you will forget about the car.

Forget the car, the traffic will send you mental!!! Meet the people as Port Said said!!!! LOL
Must see!!!!! egyptian museum, downtown, pyramids at Giza, Hire a driver for the day to take you to see all the sights like mosques, markets, citadel etc. Agree a price before hand. Have a great trip.

Get a copy of the lonely planet, great guide book. But remember prices are always at least 2 years out of date. that will give you lots of advice.
do not drive in Cairo unless you have a death wish. Hire a car and driver for about the same price, let him him get high blood pressure while you relax.

if you will be in cairo,,do not rent car.. enjoy to be in cairo. if you will travel in egypt,,rent car. good luck
