Monica, I was just about to open a new thread for this important event.
The International women’s day was established in 1977 by the United Nations. Since then the 8th March is celebrated as an International Women’s Day (IWD) all over the glob.
In addition to your list of gender inequalities facing women around the glob. There is another fearful enemy that is striking , it is HIV/ADIS. The 2004 women’s day addresses Women and HIV/AIDs .
Ten years ago, women worldwide made up 38 per cent of people infected with the disease. Today they make up 50 per cent. In some regions this ratio has tilted further towards women: in the Caribbean it is 52 per cent, in Africa, 58 percent. But the question is why is women are increasingly infected ?
As UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s said today “Why, then, are women -- usually not the ones with the most sexual partners outside marriage, or more likely than men to be injecting drug users -- more vulnerable to infection? Usually, because society’s inequalities puts them at risk. There are many factors, including poverty, abuse and violence, lack of information, coercion by older men, and men having several partners.
So again it is gender inequalities that hinder women’s role in the society and subject them to grave health consequences.
Although, HIV/AIDs prevalence is relatively less in the Middle East. However, in comparison % of infected women in the middle east is higher than other affected countries except for SubSaharain Africa.

Thank you Mooly for adding this most valuable info.
Extremely important issue to consider, and to remember every day, actually. Education is the key indeed.
Some of the women, victims of 'poverty, abuse and violence, lack of information, coercion by older men, and men having several partners' will NOT survive HIV/AIDs...
UNLESS, they get a little help from our friends: MEN!!! AMEN! Monica

Monica-the woman...Unique, your post that is. Indeed, it is a woman's world. It is about time men have their own day as well, alas, it will be a woman whom will set that date.

jaguar, I have a surprise for you! I think you'll be happy to know that International men's day is November 19th since 1999! Matter of fact, I had no idea! A woman friend mentioned it this evening!
