Welsafy that makes alot of sense. Sounds like there is a transition from male to man and maybe not all make it. You seem well on the way because you always show us your honesty here.

I was not referring directly to the sex stuff. There was a note of insecurity running throughout the description and a note almost resembling desperation in places. It was excellent and, not being a male, I just wondered how close to reality the desctription was.

This is an insult to all men dead being anonymous.
And an apology to Hitler, Stalin, and Milosevic that recently died, but also of Ben Laden that will be remembered. People will remember them of course, so they are men and value more than other men, who, because of being less educated have less valuable lifes?
I don't think so, this type of ideas are extremist as the presentation plan clearly shows: the male is the bad, and the man is the good.
This vision relegates the people not being part of the elite like being less than human.
So if you apply this vision to the world: you have (let's be generous) 25% of men and the rest are males.
This is an eugenistic vision (darwinian in someway) of humanity, that carries some truth, but that is denying the right to live to a category of human beings.
This simplificating theory would certainly have pleased to someone like Hitler who considered Jews like not humans and that killed 6 millions of them. And it's even more insulting as you imply that those 6 millions jews were not men enough to avoid being killed.
Now your ideology has a good side:
Because a look at history reveals that the type of man that you describe also makes our world a better one. Gandhi, Rabin, Kennedy, Martin Luther King (let's be generous) John Lennon, Mandela, Massoud, eventually Jesus, are all men (according to your definition) that took a step forward to spread their ideas and to make this world a better place.
But, and this is another criteria which makes me think this distinction Male vs Man is dangerous; all those great men who contributed to turn a maximum amount of males to men have been victims of other men that wanted to keep things the way they were. Yes they were men with great ideas, but they didn't manage to stay alive... Yes they were victims, but they made that step to be hated the way they were. A man who wants to become more than a man and forgets that he carries also a male enters the legend, but paying more than a man can pay.

But after having criticized this neo-freudian answer to the question of "How it is to be a man?", i owe you my own version.
To be or not to be a man? that is not the question to me. A man is a man as soon as he is biologically born a man.
The question was "how does it feel to be a man?"
A tchek writer (Kundera) wrote something that will inspire my answer; he divides the human being in two: a body, and a soul.
To the consistency of our body is being opposed the inconsistency of our soul. But the two are not strictly separable. The body is affected by the soul, and the soul evolves with the body.
The soul and the body are feeling the manship. Without the body sending signals to the soul through our five senses, we would be handicaped physically in "feeling" our manhood. And without our soul receiving the signals send by the body, we would handicaped mentally or psychologically in "feeling" our manhood.
This is the passive side of how it feels like to be a man, the side that feels the environment, that receives information. And feeling like a man (rather than feeling like anything else) is always related to the way we perceive things, to the way we want to position ourselves in our environment. And this positionning in the environment marks the switch to another kind of process.
The soul that have received information from the body analyses it. Neuro-psychiatrists will explain this process better, but something up there in our brain tells us how to treat the information. Whatever is happening around us or whatever we are being involved in, our brain works on it. Now the fact that our brain is affected by the surrounding events does not necessarily means that our soul focuses on it. That's the tricky part, that pushes some persons to distinguish between males and men. But finally, males are only men whose souls are less curious about the world that evolves around them. We can regret of course, this lack of curiosity, but we shall not put a blame on it.
Now having taken the environment into consideration, the soul, the essence of the man chooses the reaction we will have. The soul chooses in the panel of the emotions available to answer. We must note there that the training of the brain offers a wider or a narrower choice of emotions.
Then the soul exterioses itself, by the brain, then by the rest of the body. And the man impacts on the environment, an impact that sends back to the beginning of the process that repeats itself over and over again, and that gives our spirit a whole picture of how it feels like to be a man.
And in the exteriorising of the soul, the man discovers he has limits to deal with. Those limits are set by the environment, but there is also the limits of the body that have to be taken into consideration. Because a man is just a man, because we physically can't use more than (let's be generous) 30% of our brain. So to be a man also feels like being powerless.
To overcome this powerlessness and to make him remember he is worth something, the man feels like he has to do things. And he the things he does seems so great to him that he continues to do those things and realizes that the things he does makes of him not only a man, but someone. And by being someone, the man distinguishes himself from other men, and feels like to be a man is based on being unique, on being one of a kind. The man knows he is the same as all the other men, but he feels like to be a man is also by doing everything he can not to be like all the other men. And every man has his own style in dissociating himself from other men, and his own style makes him feel a particular way of being a man, so in fact, every man has his own answer to the question: "how does it feel like to be a man?"
And there comes the part of recognition. The man carries a need for recognition which is more or less intense. The intensity of this need finds his root in the behaviour of the man's parents. For example, Ben Laden, being born in a family where he had about fifty brothers and sisters has got a tremendous need for recognition, that can explain his taste for fame. In this line of example, the spectacular decisions of G W Bush are testifying of his need of recognition.
And to be a man also feels like draining sometimes, especially when you try to explain the unexplainable.
