[QUOTE]Originally posted by Ninaeuro: Hi I had my children in Cairo, I am sure that Alex will have good doctors too. I had a check up once a month, etc.. just like in the UK, normal delivery etc.. The total cost was 50 egp per visit, then for the delevery and hospital room for 1 night, around £700 Sterling. the only thing thats done differently, is that once you go home thats it, your mother/family/friends etc.. will be helping you, no health visitor as in the UK. You actually go to see a recommended Paedertrician, normally recommended by the doctor, and you will again pay on each visit. Don't worry all is fine. Any more info, let me know

Egypt is not doing that bad. Mortality among kids under 5 yo is 78 on 1000. Compared to neighbours Libya 31/1000 and Sudan 185/1000. Western: US 16/1000, UK 12/1000 Netherlands 11/1000 One can have birth at home if there are no complications, that is among most Dutch still conceived as the most safe birthgiving. Hospitals and specialists have there own mortalityrates.

Thanks for your help. I am planning on having it in Alex, there is a famous army Hospital there that I will hopefully be going to it is Surposed to be one of the Best in the Country, with some of the best doctors. I also looked on the website for the British embassy and learnt that I can get it British citizenship also so that should be good. I am a bit worried about not having the health visitor like in the UK, I expected this, but it is reasurring when you have someone coming to see you for a while after just to check that everything is going ok.
I am 9 weeks now so still a long way to go but I really happy and excited.
Thanks again for your help, if you do have any more information I would be really appreciative of your input
Thank you all!!!

Nina, your kids will get British nationality but they will not be able to give it to THEIR kids if they're born outside the UK. I know that may not seem important to you now, but it happened to a friend of mine; her British son born in Egypt was not able to give British nationality to his baby.
So if you are thinking of the long term, you might want to have it back in the UK.
Regarding birth methods here, unfortunately maximum interference is the order of the day, including general anaesthetic (which isn't even in the books) and forceps or ventouse. YOu'll have to make it very clear what kind of birth you want. They do have epidurals now too, but 'natural' birth is not in demand and not encouraged by doctors - there are no midwives either.

Yeah, I heard positive things about him as well. I personally wouldn't go to a male gynaecologist though ... how come in Egypt there are more men than women in this profession???

Oh good LORD! That would be heaven and paradise. Solve 80% of the world's problems right there!
providing there are no complication - breech etc.
If men are so great, if men are better than women and only men can recieve the word of God, then men can handle anything, including complications in childbirth.

im so glad i was delivered by a woman with my first child.
i actually had a gay midwife with my 4th... he was fantastic! he was sooooo camp it was hysterical! he looked at my notes and said [in a very camp voice] "oh, i see youve never had an epidural... go on, have one... treat yourself" so i did, and it was the best thing anyone has ever advised me to do!!!!

i find as im getting older i really dont want to see male doctors.
i dont know why... the male doctors at my practice are great.
it might be cause when i was younger they are just older than you so its fine to ask for help and advise... but as the doctors seem to be more my own age now... and soon younger... i just dont want to talk to be treated by them.
i dont mean in A&E or even simple doctors stuff... but any kind of personal stuff.
i wouldnt not have a man do a smear test on me.
and when it comes to child birth you MUST be comfortable and happy with everything or it can be dangerously traumatic.

I had my first son here in Cairo. I did it the hard way which I wouldn't recommend to anyone. We didn't have much money because we had just finished building our flat. My husband's family is a bit more old fashioned so my western ways were a big wake up call for him in "proper" medical care. Both of his sisters never saw doctors except once to find out the gender of the baby and most were delivered by their husbands or mother at home. With our first son (now 9 months old) I went through 4 doctors. First I tried going to women doctors because my husband wasn't comfortable with men. Then the two women we saw were so horrible and his aunt recommended a male doctor. In the end we used this male doctor, I had a c-section (with a general anes. which I hated to do) and some crappy hospital here. I won't be making any of those mistakes this time. I am 22 weeks pregnant now and I have a wonderful doctor. He was recommended by the U.S. Embassy. He charges one fee of 800 LE for the whole pregnancy (not including c-section or delivery). I have a sonogram at almost every visit, he and his staff are very professional and he is very thorough. My husband is working at As Salam International Hospital in Maadi (which is suppose to be one of the best). We are thinking to have the baby there, but not sure yet. At any rate, that's my experience so far. Good Luck!
