Egyptian authorities support women-empowerment efforts
Egyptian First Lady Suzanne Mubarak said on Thursday that Egyptian political authorities have been a great support of women-empowerment efforts.
Suzanne Mubarak, head of the Egyptian National Council for Women, made the remarks in an interview broadcast Thursday by the Dubai-based satellite TV channel al-Arabiya news channel, underlining the political support Egyptian women are enjoying.
Established in 2000 following a political resolution, the National Council for Women is in charge of reviewing all draft laws on the Egyptian woman and family and expressing its opinions among other jobs, she noted.
So far, the council has backed all the laws that have to do with women and family issues, she added, indicating programs to mainly support rural women breadwinners with a small-loan project meant to help women improve their income.
Moreover, she said that investments must be made to improve Egyptian women's capabilities and potentials so that they can take part in social development.
As for the achievements made by Egyptian women in the different fields, the Egyptian First Lady said that Egypt have succeeded to have a female judge after a 20-year-long struggle.
She also noted that Egyptian women oppose setting a certain quota for women in the People's Assembly (the lower house the Egyptian parliament) and official institutions.
It is high time for women to feel confident in their abilities and experience, she added, calling for equal chance for women to practise their rights with men.
