The 2nd Miss Arab World Contest started in Egypt on Wednesday, with the participation of some 19 girls.
According to the organizing committee at a press conference here, the candidates to the contest came from 16 Arab countries, including Egypt, Lebanon, Sudan, Iraq, Sudan, Libya and Palestine.
The competition is one of the major attractions of the 2nd Arab Tourism Festival , which also opened here on Wednesday.
The jury consists of fashion, beauty and tourism experts as well as academies and the finalists chosen from more than 10,000 participants who registered through internet.
The final result of the contest is expected to be announced on Friday evening.
Ghada Hassan, 19, a girl from Saudi Arabia and now is studying business in an academy in Egypt, told a press conference that she has become the first Saudi girl to attend the contest, expressing her excitement and gratitude to the contest organizing committee.
Being not veiled and in a short-sleeve blouse and long trousers, Hassan also told Xinhua that her family and relatives sounded opposition at first but agreed later.
The first Miss Arab World Contest was held in Egypt's Red Sea resort Sharm el-Sheikh from July 26 to July 29, 2006, with the title of Miss Arab World 2006 going to Nadia Bin Fadla from Tunisia, which was retracted later for her not abiding by competition rules.
