We decided to drive across the US four days ago..... so, next morning, we got in our little camper van and started to head west. We went via Alabama and Mississippi to Louisiana. Had a great day in New Orleans... now we're in San Antonio, Texas. Tomorrow we'll head towards New Mexico, Arizona, stop off in Las Vegas, then off to California. We'll probably be in California in the New Year. Oh.... the joys of retirement!!! So y'all..... have a great Christmas and New Year!!!

I wont ask how you got from trying to buy a fridge magnet to someone's sister
I've never been to Tijuana but I've always wanted to go. Take lots and lots of snaps. It sounds like an awesome trip.

Try to get to see Bobby Trendy on north La Cienega Blvd, just up from trashy Lingerie. He was sitting outside his shop and we had a right laugh. Had my pic taken with him. Go to Fredericks to buy hubby a present!!
Hollywood is quite small really so you can walk around easily. Walk around Beverley Hills, down to the hotel and see the toilets that George Michael got caught with his pants down Have breakfast in the Bev Hills Hotel in the gardens. Drive over to Brentwood to 5th Helena Dr ( is just a tiny cul de sac) and see where Marilyn died, not far away is Nicole Simpson's house on Bundy Dr. Looks so much smaller than on all those TV reports.
Oh I could go on for hours.........
We spent a week with a map and walked the length and breadth of it and saw all the famous places and loads!!! of stars
Would hate to live there but you will have a great time exploring it.
Malibu and Venice Beach are just a short drive out of Sunset Blvd on the Pacific Coast highway.

Did Hollywood today, Hermione..... took the obligatory photo of the big letters.... Yes. looked in Fredricks, Walked along and looked at all the star name thingys... only recognised about a half.... Went to Beverly hills and looked at the posh houses..... Rodeo Drive- what's all the fuss about? Didn't see a single star... just some wannabees trying to look eccentric, and trying to get noticed!!! Bought my customary fridge magnet (got to have one from everywhere!!) We're now on our way up the coast, towards Monterey.

We drove up the California coast today... through Carmel... and now we're in a hotel in Pacific Grove, Monterey. We visited Hearst Castle.. which was once the home of WR Hearst, who owned loads of newspapers ( Older ES'ers will remember his grandaughter, Patty).... Huge castle.... but I don't think money always buys good taste!! JMHO !! We stopped along the coast.... some of the beautiful scenery I've ever seen!! and saw a colony of huge elephant seals, basking in the sun, and swimming... and 2 were fighting!! Awesome!!! We'll stay here a couple of days (It's nice to sleep in a decent bed and have a nice hot shower and to be able to blow-dry my hair occasionally!!) It's nice for Mr. M.... because he spent many years living and working here when he was much younger.... we're revisiting a lot of his old haunts!!!

Monterey - is it the site of the famous music festival from 1967? Now I want to be there as well! Yes, when travelling we come to really appreciate ordinary things like a nice hot shower... Anyway, seems like a journey of a lifetime. I have to save this thread; perhaps I will follow in your footsteps one day, Mamasue...

Hermione.... nope... not a soul... not even anybody who vaguely resembled anybody famous!! We drove on to San Francisco, and spent a couple of days. The first day it rained all day ... so we wandered around the shops, drove down Lombard Street, which is the crookedest street in the world... Next day, we tried to get a trip to Alcatraz, but they were fully booked for 3 days. We spent a lot of time on the harbour watching the seals on the jetty. We had a long lunch... sitting in a restaurant window and people-watching. We decided to skip Vegas, as we were there 2 years ago... and decided to head for Reno instead. We drove across the Sierra Nevada mountains.... it was dark, slippery, windy, snowy (up to 5 feet in some places!!) There were huge trucks overtaking us... it was a very scarey journey!! Reno... omygod.... what a dump!!! Like a mini Vegas... but badly neglected.... closed-down hotels and shops.... scruffy casinos....horrible!! But.... I put my $1 in a slot.... and won $2.50.... the last of the big-time gamblers!!! We left Reno this morning to head for Salt Lake City, Utah. We've stopped for the night at a nice little hotel, in a little town called Winniemucca.... again, looking forward to a real bed and a shower!!! I hope the new year's treating all my ES friends well!!!

We spent the last 2 days driving through snow blizzards.... today was great, until we hit a huge snowstorm in Colorado..... It was really scarey.... no houses, towns, couldn't even see the road... and no cellphone signal!!! It was really scarey!!! We found a little town in Cortez... just as I was about to have hysterics... and booked into the only motel for miles!!! The motel staff say the snowploughs will be out tonight.... otherwise we'll be getting to know the inhabitants of Cortez very well!!!
