'This is the first case we know of where someone was jailed for groping': Egyptian women's advocate

CAIRO - An Egyptian judge on Tuesday sentenced a man to three years in jail with hard labour for groping a woman on a Cairo street, a judicial source said.
Sherif Gomaa was also ordered to pay his victim, 27-year-old Egyptian filmmaker Noha Rashid Saleh, 5,001 Egyptian pounds ($894) in compensation.
The sentencing was unusual for its severity, a women's rights activist said.
This is the first case we know of, where someone was jailed for groping," said Engy Ghozlan, an activist with the Egyptian Centre for Women's Rights (ECWR).
"We welcome the ruling. The judge was obviously setting an example."
The defendant was accused of repeatedly groping the victim from his car as he drove slowly alongside her as she walked down the street. The victim held on to his car's side-mirror until she persuaded him to go to a police station, local media reported.
This summer, ECWR issued a survey saying 83 per cent of Egyptian women and 98 per cent of foreign women in Egypt had experienced sexual harassment.
The study said only 12 per cent of the 2,500 women who reported cases of sexual harassment to ECWR went to the police with their complaint.
It is "a total lack of confidence in the police and judicial systems," Ghozlan said.
A British embassy official, speaking on background, told AFP the embassy had received 14 complaints of sexual harassment and rape during a one-month-period this year in the Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh.
There were two complaints during the same period last year, the official said. "It does seem there is an increase. I don't know whether it because more people are reporting it, or because there are more assaults."
The official said Egyptian police had visited the United Kingdom last year to receive training on handling sexual assault cases, and that British police were expected to visit Egypt later this year to continue the training.
The Egyptian tourist ministry says sexual harassment is not especially common in Egypt. "I'm not denying there is a problem, but it happens anywhere," said spokeswoman Heba El-Khatib.

Yeah, I dont know why they make it illegal, it's just pepper and hurts. The alternatives cause blindness and are easy to get heheh.

heheh well she just doesn't want to be bothered. The people living in our buildings are good people, but we have construction going on around us and some of those construction guys are pretty low. You could point to a cardboard box on the street, tell them there was a girl inside it and they would start harassing the box.

Criminal Court Sentences Man to Three Years in First Sexual Harassment Case in its History

The Cairo Criminal Court yesterday heard a sexual harassment case for the first time in its history.
The court sentenced the defendant to three years in prison and fined him a temporary compensation of 501 pounds.
The courtroom witnessed protests by human rights and women's organizations activists that denounced the sexual harassments that women in Egypt suffer from.
Normally women do not report harassments so as to avoid scandal. This time, however, Noha Rushdi, a 27-year-old film director and victim of the above case, requested that the trial be public, which her family agreed with.
She told the press that Sherif Gabriel, the accused, was driving a pickup.
He slowed down and approached her. Suddenly he grabbed her by her breasts, so she fell on the ground. She screamed, but no one came to help her.
The driver tried to drive on but had to stop when there was another car coming from the other direction.
She said Egyptians lost their gallantry, as she fought with the driver for nearly two hours, while the pedestrians were simply watching.
The defendant’s mother was crying and said that her son is innocent because he does not do such things.
Following an altercation between the defense teams, the court decided to hold a secret hearing.
The defendant and his lawyer were taken to the deliberation room, where they pleaded innocent.

It's hilarious. A woman lawyer accused the lady (Noha) who was sexually assaulted. that she is Israeli (that's an insult and a crime), that she is receiving support by the Israelis government in order to defame Egypt by falsely claiming that she was sexually assaulted. That lawyer made other claims that about Noha that she can not in any way support. The lawyer called the show while Noha was live on the set and she was hilariously stupid. Imagine Egyptian sono She could not answer the simplest of questions. حظيت قضية التحرش الجنسي باهتمام خلال الفترة الماضية، حتي أصبحت جزءاً من خطاب الحياة اليومية بين النساء في المجتمع المصري، فحتي وقت قريب كانت المرأة تخشي أن تتحدث وتصرح بتعرضها لأي شكل من أشكال التحرش، فقد كن يعتبرنه في إطار «العيب» و «الجٌرسة»، ومع زيادة المشكلة وتعدد صورها، وجدن أن السبيل أمامهن هو التحدث حول المشكلة، ومحاولة البحث عن حلول خاصة بعد أن أصبحت المشكلة يومية، ولذا قام المركز المصري لحقوق المرأة بعمل دراسة استطلاعية بعد تلقيه 100 شكوي من نساء تعرضن لأشكال عديدة من التحرش، وذلك بهدف تقديم تفسير متكامل للمشكلة في ضوء الواقع المصري، ولتساعد نتائج الدراسة صانعي القرار وواضعي السياسات لإيجاد طرق فعالة للحد منها، وجعل المجتمع المصري آمنا لجميع من فيه مصريين، وأجانب ذكوراً وإناثاً. تقول رشا محمد حسن الباحثة بالمركز والتي قامت بإعداد الدراسة إنها تعد من أولي الدراسات الوصفية التحليلية التي أولت الاهتمام بتناول ظاهرة التحرش الجنسي من جميع جوانبها، وأجريت علي عينة متساوية من الذكور والإناث المصريات بلغت 2020 مفردة، كما اشتملت علي النساء الأجانب المقيمات لأغراض مختلفة في مصر، وعددهن 109 سيدات، بمحافظات القاهرة، والجيزة، والقليوبية. وقالت نهاد أبو القمصان، رئيس المركز والمشرفة علي الدراسة، إن النتائج حددت سبعة أشكال للتحرش ، وهي لمس جسد الأنثي، التصفير، المعاكسات الكلامية، النظرة الفاحصة لجسد الأنثي، التلفظ بألفاظ ذات معني جنسي، الملاحقة والتتبع، المعاكسات التليفونية، وأن كل النساء بمختلف أعمارهن، يتعرضن للتحرش حسبما جاء علي لسان الأجنبيات والمصريات. بينما قال الذكور إن النساء في الفئات العمرية 19-20 عاماً، هن الأكثر عرضة للتحرش وفيما أكدت الغالبية العظمي من عينات الدراسة من المصريات والذكور أن المظهر العام معيار للتحرش، ونفت الأجنبيات ذلك، وقد يرجع ذلك- كما تقول أبو القمصان- إلي اختلاف الثقافات بين المصريين والأجانب، فكثيراً ما يري المصريون أن الفتاة المحجبة والمحتشمة، هي الفتاة التي تسلم من أي ضرر، في حين أن الفتاة المتحررة هي الأكثر عرضة، ويعكس هذا مدي وعي الأجنبيات بثقافة حقوق المرأة، والتي هي جزء من حقوق الإنسان. وقالت إن النتائج أوضحت ارتفاع نسب تعرض عينة البحث من المصريات والأجنبيات للتحرش الجنسي بنسب مرتفعة، وصلت ما بين المصريات إلي 83% والأجنبيات 98%، وكان الشارع هو البطل ومسرح التحرش الأول، يليه المواصلات العامة ثم الأسواق والمولات، ثم المؤسسة التعليمية سواء المدرسة أو الجامعة، وجاء بعد ذلك الشواطئ والمطاعم والمقاهي، والنوادي الرياضية. كما أكدت نسبة كبيرة من الأجنبيات أنهن تعرضن للتحرش في الأماكن السياحية. وأوضحت النتائج الاعتقاد الخاطئ، بأن ظاهرة التحرش الجنسي مرتبطة بما ترتديه النساء من ملابس غير محتشمة، أو متبرجة علي حد قول البعض، حيث ثبت من الدراسة أن أكثر الفئات تعرضاً للتحرش، اللائي ارتدين بلوزة قصيرة وجونيلة وحجاب. أما عن الآثار النفسية التي أصابت ضحية المتحرش فتمثلت- كما أشارت الدراسة- في الشعور بالغضب الشديد، والخوف، والألم، ثم الإحراج والخجل والاضطراب، مع زيادة الشعور بالصداع وصعوبة النوم مع الأحلام المفزعة، علاوة علي الارتباك وعدم القدرة علي التصرف وأيضاً الاكتئاب. وتقول أبو القمصان، إن النتائج أوضحت أن الغالبية العظمي من النساء، لم يفعلن شيئاً إزاء تعرضهن للتحرش مما يعد من أكثر المعوقات أمام جهود الحد من ممارسة التحرش الجنسي، خوفاً من تأثير ذلك علي سمعتهن أو خوفاً من ردود أفعال الناس. ولهذا تري المحامية نهاد أبو القمصان، أن صمت النساء وعدم مساعدة الناس لهن أثناء حدوث واقعة التحرش، يعد معوقاً كبيراً أمام التبليغ حيث أنه يعطي الثقة للمتحرش من أن يستمر في ارتكاب جرائمه، ولذلك فعلينا أن نرفع حاجز الصمت، والحديث عن عواقب هذه الظاهرة وآثارها السلبية علي المرأة، المعروف عنها بأنها نصف المجتمع، فإذا لم يسلم هذا النصف فلن يسلم النصف الآخر. توصيات مهمة وخرجت الدراسة بمجموعة من التوصيات المهمة منها: ضرورة نشر الوعي بمفهوم التحرش، والذي أصبح يشتمل علي العديد من السلوكيات، التي تبدأ بمجرد التصفير، والمعاكسات الكلامية، مروراً بالمضايقات الجنسية، ووصولاً إلي هتك العرض، وقد يؤدي هذا الوعي إلي التعريف بخطورة المشكلة، ومن ثم التصدي لمواجهتها، مع العمل علي تكثيف الدراسات والأبحاث الاجتماعية، والنفسية، والقانونية لدراسة المشكلة من جميع الزوايا، والتركيز علي قياس أهم الأسباب النفسية، التي تجعل المتحرش يرتكب هذه الجريمة. وتري التوصيات أيضاً ضرورة تدريب رجال الشرطة علي كيفية التعامل مع قضايا التحرش الجنسي، والمطالبة بتكثيف الوجود الأمني في الشوارع، والمواصلات العامة، وسرعة تحرير المخالفات، ومساندة الضحية، وهي إجراءات يمكنها أن تخفف من وقائع التحرش الجنسي، والتأكيد علي أن المرأة هي الضحية بالأساس، وأن فعل التحرش ضدها، هو فعل جنائي يمارس ضدها. وطالبت التوصيات بإنشاء مجموعة من المكاتب لتلقي شكاوي التحرش الجنسي مع ضرورة تضامن مؤسسات المجتمع المدني من أجل وضع استراتيجية للحد من هذه الظاهرة، مع استحداث قانون لتحديد مفهوم الفعل وتجريمه وقواعد الإثبات، فضلاً عن إعطاء صلاحية الضبط القضائي لضابط الأمن في الشارع، وتحرير المحضر، وذلك علي نماذج معدة مسبقاً أسوة بمخالفات المرور الفورية. كما يخصص لها سجل في قسم الشرطة، وإذا ما كرر الشخص نفس الفعلة يكون لها العقوبة، حيث يعد تكرار البلاغ سبباً في إثبات الواقعة علي مرتكبها. وأخيراً ردع الموظف الذي يشترك في الامتناع عن تحرير محضر أو يشترك بأي شكل سلباً أو إيجاباً مع الجاني ضد المرأة في حالة تقدمها بشكويPosts: 132 | Registered: Aug 2005

Oh come on she was likely groped. This is great news. Egypt is finally recognising this is happening and is prepared to do something about it.
No matter what degree of self dense training you have, you will not be able to defend yourself effectively due to the surprise/shock factor.
Very similar thing happened to me a few weeks back but he actually tried to pull me into the car. I am still looking for this guy as he won't be fit to go to jail when I catch him!!
