Egypt and its allies in the north were basically unable to control the bands of banditlike clans of Apiru who were extremely war-like and taking over central Syria during the reign of Amenophis III. His Son Akhenaton did absolutely nothing effective to protect the Northern territories, or even help his friends when they called upon him. This is where the rot started. This is a very simplified version of history of course. Hope it answers your first question to some extent. I dont do modern history. Charlie

The United Arab Republic, a union of Syria and Egypt was created for a variety of sometimes contradictory reasons and surreptitious agenda. One was Arabisation, and the desire to consolidate Arab domination of the Region and so suppress any conception of non Arab nationalism. Another was to prevent the communist(s) from taking over Syria by sublimating them to Nasser's pro Western government. Eventually Syrians got tired of the practical result of being politically dominated by Egypt. However, even after the nations split, the name United Arab Republic was retained until Sadat changed it to Arab Republic of Egypt in the early '70s.
