This is a great article. It makes it clear that by 1200 BC there were stone towns in the Western Sudan as early as Dhar/Dar Tichitt.
I have tried to keep up with events at Dar Tichitt over the years, but I was surprised to learn that the Tichittians left evidence for writing. This indicates that these people had writing in addition to stone cities.

Well with the information found in that text we can state that ci vilization in West Africa has antiquity older than most of Western Europe and nearly as old as Greece. There is no need to postulate Islamic traders as the main impetus for Sudanic civilization.
