Bootleg DVD's in Syria?!!! Cheapest DVD's are to be had in Malaysia if you're coming from Australia. About $1.50 each in Chinatown, KL.

The answer is NO, you can't. You will have people bring them to you from the far east, or you will get them yourself in the far east when you travel there, if you get them at all.
You can download movies off your own computer if you have the know-how to do that and the equipment to play it afterwards, but that is the best you can do in Cairo that I know about.
You can't buy DVD, but what I do is that I download films from the net with DVD quality which is Divx and play them on the dvd player on the tv, and that's amazing. I have films that are still not at the cinema. Btw I have DSl this why I download films, mp3.....etc.

there is, though i can't point you to a specific source, sorry. you just have to know the right guy, etc.
even alpha market in zamalek rents dvds (LE10 or 15) and some of their movies are bootleg copies (usually the ones which haven't yet been released in egyptian cinemas)
You can go to any bigger mosque on Friday, you wil find the newest games, films, cartoons, software.......for 5 Pounds ! Yesterday my husband bought the game 'shark tale' in 3D. If you buy it original you have to spend 95 Pounds. I couldn't! So I have to buy the black copies, like the most of people. Also there are sold in the egyptian Backstreet markets (sook), watch out for large cartoons with black and white copies of the original CD's. In Maadi go to Fath or Rayen Mosque, at Rayen also on Sundays.

Sara
Maybe he bought some game for 5LE but I'd bet he will NEVER find the movie Shark Tale out there for sale pirated for cheap.

what do you mean by Face DVD? Like you buy the DVD and go home and find that is was not a DVD ??? I f you mean BACKUP coppies , then well, it seems there are leanty of backu copies being distributed arround in cairo, but you can still download anything you like and burn it on your own DVD. I like Bettorent, and DAP, and the proces of blank CD's and DVD's in Egypt is soooooo cheep I cannot belive it, I am creating backups for the backups . mmm and giving it away to my friends ( ofcourse I always asume they have allready buyght the original Copu, nd they just want another backup ) as I did myself

You will find the Fath mosque in the Street 9 in Maadi. It is the famous street on the metrostations. Move direction 'Hadayek', then you will find the mosque on your right side. To the mosque belongs a islamic hospital.

I wonder what customs will make of that lot; they checked every one of my books, tapes, and CDs when I shipped them over here!

a couple of the electrical shops along 26th july (zamalek) sell bootleg copies under the counter. they aren't that cheap and sometimes the quality is poor. they usually have whats currently on at the cinema or movies which are about to be released

Please, Brian, let us know if you ran into any problems with customs. If we move next year we will also have a big load of DVDs packed up. I am a huge movie fan!
I heared really bad stories that whole crates or boxes got lost during the shipping process.

when you pay 5 pounds for a cd, then for sure it's not a DVD cd, but just normal cd, beacuse if's a DVD for 5 pounds then how much for just normal VCD 1 pound. You said that you watch it at computer is it on cd player or dvd player.

They are 'formated', so it works out. 'Difficult and long' games are sometimes offered in a packet of two cd's because the original DVD has more space.
Well, I got very happy with it. Just go there and watch it out
