Ah, after decades of wanting to own an up to date es~Sa'adi translation not the antiquated French one. Words cannot express my thanks. U r a hero!
But what's with Hunwick? Does he have a life outside the dust of pre-industrial W. Africa? Mali's president needs to "knight" him.

Happy to have helped. And yea, that Hunwick is definitely an overachiever. It's like he aspires to be the sole repository for all Sudanic knowledge. He's put out some excellent work.

^It says it analyses hair from multiple geographic areas, might be interesting if it aamples varied African areas
Note on Five Pelves of Women of the Eleventh Dynasty in Egypt - D. E. Derry
^ mentions the hair characteristics of a few Southern Egyptian/Nubian mummies, says that its curly, but we need the full text to see what cross section index was observed

^^Study 1 looks shaky on a number of points. It does not detail exactly what local areas its purported 'African' samples are from, and then they casually try to relate 'differences' to genetics. North Africa for example in several studies and in official UN geographic documents includes huge parts of Chad, Niger, Mali and the northern Sudan. Any claimed "North African" data needs to include these areas, or specifically say who and what locality is being sampled so readers can know their provenance. Not surprisingly, the authors dodge such specificity.

Read it and I agree with what is already said by Zaharan and CB.
Will add that the closeness of the North African sample to Europeans is inconsistent with what we know about their hybrid status, as documented in their lineages. **If** their North African sample is representative of said hybrid type, this may be taken to indicate that a significant portion of the closeness of their NA sample to Euros can be attributed to already present indigenous variation.

quote:In a recent publication, Bosch et al. (2001) reported on Y-chromosome variation in populations from northwestern (NW) Africa and the Iberian peninsula. They observed a high degree of genetic homogeneity among the NW African Y chromosomes of Moroccan Arabs, Moroccan Berbers, and Saharawis, leading the authors to hypothesize that “the Arabization and Islamization of NW Africa, starting during the 7th century ad, … [were] cultural phenomena without extensive genetic replacement” (p. 1023). H71 (Eu10) was found to be the second-most-frequent haplogroup in that area. Following the hypothesis of Semino et al. (2000), the authors suggested that this haplogroup had spread out from the Middle East with the Neolithic wave of advance. Our recent findings (Nebel et al. 2000, 2001), however, suggest that the majority of Eu10 chromosomes in NW Africa are due to recent gene flow caused by the migration of Arabian tribes in the first millennium of the Common Era (ce).

The interesting thing here is that other haplogroups with a supposed Neolithic origin from the Near East, have very low frequencies in Egypt. On the other hand, haplogroup J reaches significant frequencies which is more suggestive of recent demographic events as noted by Cadenas et al. (2007). So while the expansion time seems Neolithic, the high frequencies seem recent.

Please help refresh my memory: what would those haplogroups be?

What would account for this? Were these haplogroups always trickling into Egypt but at insignificant levels until historical times?
Another thing I find weird is the fact that while Europe received significant immigration from Southwest Asia during the Neolithic, Egypt apparently didn't experience such mass colonization (or at least mass population replacement). Did Neolithic SW Asian farmers find Europe a more enticing place for settlement than the Nile Valley, or did the Nilotes put up more resistance than European hunter-gatherers?

I thought G and T had Neolithic origins although G may be recent.

Well, recent events may account for the high frequency in Egypt. Don't recall the STR variation at the moment, but if it is high than it may have reached Egypt during the Neolithic. However Cadenas et al. (2007) says that recent events may be the reason for elevated frequency. It looks like northeast Africa was more effected by recent events than say

In the Nile Valley they only over time developed a dependence on Agriculture and adopted Near Eastern domesticates gradually into an indigenous foraging strategy. Maybe the case wasn't the same for Europe.
