You must be going to that belly dancing thing they have at the Mena House every year. Right? Why those organizers don't organize affordable accomodation for you girls that can't afford the Mena House is beyond me. This happens EVERY bloody year.
Last year we had a gal from the boards come and organize some room down near the pyramids in the stable area. It turned out to be a nightmare for her and we all had to work to get her out of there within a few days of her arrival. Whatever you do, don't sign up to stay at some weirdos "convention center" at the pyramids area. I think that is what he termed it.
There are loads of cheap 3* hotels along Pyramids Road. Any one of them will be as good (or bad) as another, but at least there will be affordable transportation available to you just outside your door if you stay there. Try to pick one with a Pyramids Road address. In Arabic, it would be Al-Haram Street...so look for that and while there won't be anything special about the hotel (probably), at least you'll be in a better spot for getting back and forth to the Mena House since that is what you are coming for. You can move into the city after the convention is over and find a more practical hotel later.
