No he didn't do that himself but some members of his crew did unbeknownst to him.

posted LOL You could easily tell it was faked if you know about authentic Saharan rock art! Seriously, I don't know how some experts fell for it in the first place.

Covered it a few times. Some of Lhote's crew were having one on him. Lhote removed the fake from all subsequent revisions/reprints of The Search for the Tassili Frescoes.
Apparently crew members were goading Lhote toward Egypt's direction for Algerian/Libyan art. People are still very eager to lay non-Egyptian Africa as just an echo of Egypt or wanderings from Egypt or what have you.
The problem is how can we sure what else was faked? I think some style periods are full of fakes (ibid). The art in some cases is just too good to be true.
