They did not consider themselves whites, the whites were their shoe leather. Whites emancipated in 1848 and painted history white.

He could not have been the Garibaldi if he was white. He was not white. Its much like today: do Blacks wield power in Brazil? Do Indians have power in Brazil? Please answer this question. You cannot do anything unless you are recognized as part of the elite, and whites were not even seen as human. Forget about strange definitions of what Black is, they themselves did not think of themselves as whites, and that is what counts.
